To own a collection, as this list represents? http://www.germancarforum.com/pit-general-discussion/5703-list-sultan-bruneis-complete-car-collection.html
That's not "collecting" - that's HOARDING! Photos from one of the replies there: http://img16.exs.cx/img16/821/sultanw.jpg http://img16.exs.cx/img16/5739/sultan3w.jpg I can picture this being one of the house of horrors one day, all the cars covered in desert sand, all dried out, bad belts, frozen engines..... the way they're packed in suggests that. That's nothing. I have over 300 cars, including almost 40 Ferrari's. Just look at my collection. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you have a couple of hours, you might want to read this thread. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85959
Raptorduck, that's funny. A few years back, when I still had my 308, I was at Cavallino talking to some wealthy guy with a 288gto on the lawn about my " collection". I could see his eyes thinking ,who the heck is this guy with such a huge collection. I let it sit for a minute then told him the different scales and he burst out laughing.
When money truly becomes just another thing. When it's viewed as FREE or in fact nothing at all (non existent). That's most likely how wealthy you have to be.
I'll second that!! And you've left room to rotate a few 1:1 scale models through as well! Nicely done.
And here are the current 1:1 models in rotation (in this garage anyway). Image Unavailable, Please Login
A lot of his cars are already destroyed. Many of the warehouses in which the Sultan's cars are stored are without air conditioning. I doubt even Robbie's StickyNoMore could reverse the damage that many of those cars have suffered.
I like how in the picture description it says a Shelby Cobra(probably a replica). Why would the writer think it was a replica? The Sultan has no reason to buy replicas, look at the picture with the 4 F40s and the 3 F50s!!
Well, for one thing, the Sultan never seemed to purchase the "old iron". He focused, rather, on the current production models. Often he had them customized at extraordinary cost. But, you never saw him owning the "important" cars (250 GTO, 250 TR, 250 SWB Sefac, etc.). He had an extensive collection, which was impressive purely for its magnitude, but not because the cars were particularly desirable. CW
Forge, That was probably tongue in cheek, but, in the event it wasn't, the bulk of the Sultan's collection was assembled in the '80s, IIRC. And, given Brunei's economic conditions, much of his profligate spending was turned down (if not off altogether). Also, the "issues" with his Brother (Prince Jeffrey) probably took some priority over and possibly some joy out of the toys. Regardless, mostly, the collection is slowing being sold off bit by bit. Haven't heard of any acquisitions lately. CW
Seems like he really love the 456. I read that he would buy many of the same model to use for replacement parts.
Raptor, I've been wanting to buy some 1/18 Ferrari models for sometime. What is the brand of the die cast Ferraris that you prefer and have in your collection?
Yeah, just poking fun! Nevertheless, I agree, that those cars must be rotting. I suppose they could all be prepared for storage. IMO it is a bit of a waste of some nice cars, which could be enjoyed. It's his money (even though he made it on overpricing the fuel he sold me!) to do with what he pleases. It is apparent that there doesn't seem to be many late model cars (no 360, no 430, etc.). Whatever, just commenting out of boredom! Ciao!
I have no problem with people amassing wealth but somehow I find this disgusting. Leno has a lot of cars but I think he not his subjects paid for them, also I think he likes them for what they are, this just makes me think of a naked old fat guy rolling around in piles of money. Russell
