I've taken my radiator fan motors apart, found worn brushes on both, but worse, the plastic (bakelite?) base plate that the brush-holders are mounted on is broken in one of them.

The stickers with the Lucas motor type can't be read anymore, apart from the start of the designation: LE (which I suppose is for left turning)

Can anyone complete the number? Car is an '82 GTSi Euro.

    Many thanks!

Not sure if this will help...

my car is a '78 308GTS and this worked for me:

    Welsh Enterprises (OH) 800.875.5247
    XKE Series III
    LU-78497

That is, the same fan on my car was used on the Jaguar XKE Series III and the part number is LU-78497. Good luck.

Thanks for taking the trouble to look!
The code on my fan-motors definitely starts with LE. I had an old Jag fan in the garage, but go figure, the motor on it was from Bosch! If nothing comes up I'll have to try and repair the base-plate with some wondafix or something similar.
Welsh Enterprises, btw, that would be Gregory? Great guy.

He's correct it's the same unit as the Jag V12

I had two failed units in the garage forever, let me look for them... you are welcome to the parts.
I had just had them redone when an accident jammed them up and ruined them.

I found a Grainger equal for $40, so I replaced them both!!!

    Hi Alan,

That's very nice and very generous of you, thank you!

Hold off with pulling all the boxes out of your ceiling, I'll make an attempt to repair what I have tonight, and I'll know by tomorrow if that was successful or not.

    More to follow!

I may have been so disgusted at the money/effort I tossed them but *looking at garage* it'd be the first time!!!

    Thanks Alan, Peter,

It looks like the repair of the base-plate is successful, so I'm going to install new brushes, re-paint the motors and re-install them.

    Bill,

I don't think there is any difference, both would have been equipped with identical motors/blades.
It appears that the Lucas type-number has changed though at some point, as mine started with LE, whereas others report on LU for earlier cars. No result yet for any later cars. The fans may all be interchangable.

The base plate is repaired, thanks to Mr. Pratley, now I need to get some brushes that can be made to fit, as the originals are NLA here.

Those Lucas motors and the like suck a huge amount of amps when they fire up. I dumped them for two 10" Spal type fans which suck about 1/4 the amps yet provide double the cf.

    John,

I was thinking of doing a mod for something a little more modern, but I like the look of the two OEM fans behind the grille. With the US bumper they arte not that obvious, but with thee Eueo bumper they are quite visible. I just spent some time cleaning the housings of old paint and varnish and re-paining them. I think Lucas actually sealed these units with clearcoat after they were assembled, there's not a gasket in them.

They better work when I'm done....

All done and buttoned up. They spin and look like new, and with a little elbow grease I retaned the original motors.

Thanks to all who suggested possible solutions; Alan, I hope you left the boxes in the rafters!

On to the lightswitch, going to kill some ballpoints for a suitable spring...

If I find them they are yours!!!

They do show quite well thru the grill on our cars and the Boxer...

I'm glad I am not the ONLY one to contemplate painting the tips, as shown in the photo...LOL!.

I figured while I was repainting them, I might as well give them "safety stripes" (if it's good enough for airplanes and helicopters)... :D

Looks really cool when they're running.

    Hey Alan,

You know as well as anyone here that there is no Ducati if there are no pics!
