Well, I've created an account with StrongVPN per the recommendation of a fchat user who used them with success last season. $55/yr seems like a great deal for what it is and compared to others. I tested BBC iPlayer just now and the quality is great, and the StrongVPN servers seem to have enough bandwidth to stream it smoothly. A uk speedtest while connected, shows I'm easily getting 10mb down, 2mb up.

Also worth noting is that StrongVPN has a 7-day refundable policy. The customer service really is 24/7 and they've been extremely helpful.

Regarding Filmon: I said it in the other thread, but I'll point it out again so that no one has surprises during qualifying or the race: Unlike last year, it now seems that unless you are a paying subscriber, they kick you off every 10-15min and you have to log back on (you won't be able to get back on during the race due to traffic). This is on top of the fact that they weren't always reliable last season during races even if you logged on several hours beforehand.

I have a quick question for the UK members or anyone who has experience watching BBC live online: are the practice sessions broadcasted on iPlayer?

Good to know you found a good provider :)

I might try them later in the year when I get sick of illegal feeds getting deleted mid race

Race streamed smoothly again, excellent quality.

For those of you already using the BBC feed, I found that iPlayer screen size on BBC One is a decent bit bigger than the player on the BBC Sport page. Just fyi, that's the better one to use for watching live with live timing at the side. :)

    Thanks for the tip...

I may go ahead and buy a StrongVPN subscription so I can watch it on the big screen through my HTPC.

Can you maximize the iPlayer to full screen?

Yes, you can. Full screen quality is great on my 1400x1050 14" laptop screen, but I dunno how it'll be on a large 1080p tv. Use the 1 week trial and see how regular BBC One programming looks before the next race.

On an unrelated note, even with the latest Java, live timing didn't work yesterday or today. This is with Windows 7. Others running Win 7 on f1technical also reported this problem. If it does the same thing again for the next race during practice, I'll have to dual-boot XP just for watching F1.

I think the British F1 feed went down the toilet when the BBC didn't sign James Allen along with Martin Brundle from ITV. Instead they brought in Jonathan Legard and Brundle and Legard just don't seem to flow quite as well as Brundle and Allen in my mind.

Not running Windows 7 on either of the computers I used since P1 Friday and still had re-occuring issues with the F1 live timing. Problem was resolved mostly when I reloaded the most current Java program.

I just signed up for the StrongVPN and went through the verification process. I'll report how well it works later this evening. This is the process I went through to sign up, though...

First, I went to the website and ordered the 3 city $55/year package. I have no idea what "3 city" means.

After paying (via PayPal, in my case), I was directed to a page to verify myself. The page cryptically was asking for me to scan my id and credit card and upload the images. This seemed weird, so I clicked one of the "live chat" links to speak with someone.

After a couple of minutes I was chatting via live chat with a Russian guy who told me that he needed to call me to verify some details regarding my order. I'm in Santiago on business at the moment, so I gave him my hotel phone number. After a couple more minutes my phone rang. Valadimir (in very good English) asked me to verify what I had ordered and how I had paid. He then thanked me and told me that he would send me my account details.

Immediately after the call I received an email from the company with my invoice information. I'm assuming that now I just need to log into my account using my email address and supplied password to download the VPN software. I'll do that in an hour or so and report back.

thanks for any report - I'm debating on this or subscribing to filmon - unfortunately filmon doesn't work on my iphone and I'm wondering if VPN would work on an iphone or possibly on a 3G iPad if the 3G iPad has GSM.

Jeremy, I don't recall any page asking for images of my credit card and id. I did pay directly with my credit card though, instead of Paypal. Dunno if that had anything to do with it. I contacted them through Chat to see if they could process the order asap (in time for Practice). The guy forwarded my chat session to the 'head of sales' and he called me from a Skype number immediately, asked if I made the purchase, and that was that. Got an email immediately with instructions and I was logged in, in less than a minute.

There's no software to download, you logon directly through Windows. By default, I was given a server in the US. If that happens to you, login to their site to access you account details. Go to 'VPN Accounts Summary' and change the server to one of the ones in the UK. Use Nottingham, it's the fastest.

Fwiw, they're based in San Francisco. The BBB Acredited Business logo put me at ease when debating the purchase. As did the 1-week trial. At this point, no qualms to report. Hope it's good for you too.

Well, heck. OpenVPN may not work for me.

After validating myself with Vladimir, I went back to the OpenVPN website and watched a flash video showing me how to configure the built-in Microsoft VPN software to access the OpenVPN servers. (So, no files to download. That's good.)

Initially I was directed to a server in San Francisco. I had to go back to OpenVPN help to get the list of servers in the UK. I reconfigured my VPN with the settings and, bingo! I can now watch videos from the BBC iPlayer website!

Unfortunately, iPlayer sucks. Totally, completely, absolutely sucks. iPlayer does not allow for the buffering of videos. You must watch them in real-time. If you pause the video, for example, the video doesn't keep loading in the background. This means that, unless you have a very fast network connection, you'll get two seconds of video, a 2 to 10 second pause, two more seconds of video, another 2 to 10 second pause, etc. I've googled the issue and there doesn't seem to be a workaround. The official reason that iPlayer doesn't buffer is to prevent people from being able to copy the copyrighted material.

iPlayer may work fine at my house in Texas, but from my hotel in Santiago it sucks.

I'm downloading the BBC iPlayer desktop version now to see if it works better. It claims that it will allow me to watch the content without being connected to the internet. I'll post my experiences with it later this evening.

You will be able to keep a downloaded program on your PC for a limited amount of time I can't remember how long, weeks though, it then self destructs or something I think.

The BBC is trying to protects its copyrights.

Of course there is always work arounds.

I probably had to jump through extra hoops because I paid with PayPal, put Texas as my home address, but connected from an IP address in Chile. My account probably had "potential scam" written all over it.

Thanks for the Nottingham recommendation. After the current video finishes downloading I'll change it. (I can't remember which city I picked.)

Thanks. 7 days is plenty for me. I also have my DVR set up record the F1 practice and qualifying sessions as well as the races, but I would rather watch them on my PC from the BBC (rather than the US Speed Channel's airing). I have a PC hooked up to the projector in my media room at home, but I'll have to see what the quality is like using iPlayer.
