Patrick - I believe that you can. I do not have the parts book in front of me, but getting to the seal should be achievable. You will have to remove the half-shafts, and likely the rear manifold. This leads to your removing the trunk/engine firewall. At this point you are not too far away from removing the engine, with all its advantages (refreshing hoses, detailing the engine bay, valve shim adjustment, etc.) There is plenty of help in this Forum should you choose to go-the-distance. Hello Patrick, it`s possible to do with keeping the engine in the car, should take max. 4 to 5 hours Regards Matthias
Which seals and where are the leaks coming from? The sump studs are usual culprits as oil can weep out at these points, especially if you've used a synthetic oil. One solution is to use copper crush washers and 6mm nylocks to seal these leaks.
my mechanic says, to change the shaft seals you don`t need to remove the manifold. You just have to take out the driveshaft. But it`s difficile work.... So it will take 4 to 5 hours... Regards Matthias
I'm pretty sure its the Diff seals as the CV joints are oily and they then flick it onto the manifold, making a nice smell! i reckon I should go for the engine out option at the end of the summer so I can deal with 2nd gear synchro and all the other annoying leaks!
One thing will lead to another. You will soon start thinking, "As long as I've got the engine out, I might as well . . . " and then pretty soon you've embarked upon a $10,000 to $15,000 project, or more. Good luck!
