Removing the oil temp. sender in 1979 GT4

    Can anyone advise as to whether I need to drain the oil to replace the sender.On a 79 there is an oil temp warning light which has a sender high up but the oil temp sender itself is low down on the sump area!!!

    l had to drain the oil to replace the sender in my old 74...

    No need to... as long as you don't mind cleaning up the mess. Or, you could do it on that neighbor's lawn you don't like.

    Yes, drain the oil first.

    Okay I have drained the oil and replaced the sender.I am unsure if the gauge is working can anyone advise how to check the oil temp gauge is working?

    If you connnect 12v onto the guage it should move...the sender measures resistance..if it doesnt move then the guage or the wiring to the guage is faulty

    Yeah funny things happen I connected the wire from the new sender to earth and the gauge needle moved to full on,a day later I did the same and there was nothing happening,maybe that wire is broken.Thanks Maurice.
