    Hi Guys

Hope this is not a repeat... Could not find this detail in searches... I have a 1986 328, doing an oil change today. As my 328 has a vertical drain plug instead of horizontal (requires a hex wrench VS normal socket) I am thinking that somewhere along the way my oil pan was replaced and a 308 pan was used? I assume they are interchangable with no issues....? Should this affect my oil capacity? 328 manual says cap is 10 liters.

That aside, does the 328 copper washer provided by a Ferrari dealer work on a 308 drain plug? Just though I would ask here in advance. Want to have the proper parts before I drain.

Also, assume the 25 Ft-Lbs for the torque value (per Carl Rose 328 instructions) will also serve the 308 plug assuming that is what I have.

FWIW, my 1986 328 has the same drain plug as my '78 308. It's in the bottom of the pan and uses an Allen wrench (12mm if I recall correctly), just like the 308. Oil capacity is per the manual. But I suggest you check the dipstick after you put in about 8 quarts. If the dipstick shows full, run the engine for a few minutes, then let it drain down, and check the dipstick again before you add any more. If you just pour in 10 qts, you might end up overfilling it.

p.s. Replace the copper washer. They are cheap, just buy a few of them to keep on hand. And don't overtighten it. Get it good and snug, refill the crankcase, and check for leaks. If it leaks, go easy on tightening. The pan is aluminum and the plug is steel -- very easy to strip the threads in the pan.

Early 328 (like yours) used the same style oil drain plug as 308:

The horizontal plug pan came later -- just order what you need for your style.

Oddly, my '85 Euro 308 GTS has a 328 horizontal plug pan.

The "new" 328 pan was introduced in Service Bulletin 10-16 dated 30 Dec 1986 (which makes the parts more readily available) so your car was probably updated -- an "old" pan on a newer 328 would be the more unusual situation IMO.

Thanks Guys. Couple more questions... Its my first Ferrari oil change...

    Crush Ring
The crush ring I got with my UFI filter from a Ferrari dealer is too small... Does not fit around the plug... Should the Napa part numbers in the Carl Rose instructions be "the one?" The car in his demo had the "new" pan with horizontal plug. Anyway, my car is drained...
If any of you know the part that would be great or should I just go to Napa with the old and try to replicate with a generic copper or aluminum ring?

    Drain Plug
After letting the car drain for a few hours I went to put the plug back in finger tight without a ring just for the night. I could turn it only a couple of turns by hand before it became too difficult... I also needed to use the wrench on it most of the way out... There was some stringy / stretchy goo around the plug just on the threaded side of the crush ring... Thinking like maybe teflon tape...? Perhaps there is some residual that is making the thread tight? Im just use to easy threading most of the way until near the end with most other cars I have done... Dont want to cross thread anything...

Teflon tape is used for sealing threads. the drain plugs seal on the faces of plug/Cu o-ring and Cu o-ring/sump. Also, there's a hel-coil in the Al thread, and sometimes they get moved causing a poor threading relationship. Check this carefully as it can compromise the strength of the assembly.

The pix is before. I don't have a good after pix. I made a special tool to grab the helicoil and turn it in about 1 full turn. Now it's nice, but it was a bit of a pain.
