Having just gotten home from the Manila Sports Car Club's annual bow-tie dinner, I thought I would post this photo of the club's oldest Ferrari, taken on my phone camera from my car as I was leaving the event. I thought some of you find find it interesting.

Here is a clearer picture of the Barchetta, taken this Sunday during cocktails. MSCC, founded in 1967, hosts an annual bow-tie dinner for its members, some of whom are in the photo. That's me second from the right.

    Beautiful!

Is this a 'lusso' barchetta? I've only seen photo's of one once (another car) but remember the leather doorcappings etc.

    It's a 340 America, not a 166 MM (thread title).

Hello, Marcel, Boudewijn, interesting. How can you tell (to be frank, the 166 and 340 look the same to me, except that the 340 has the large lamps below the headlamps)? The car has been here since the 50s and was recently restored in Italy. I understand it is documented as a 166.

Giotto, you seem to know the car. What does #0144A correspond to?

And here is a picture from 1955 of a Ferrari owned by the Johnny Ysmael mentioned above. A specially-bodied 340? He had a "one-off" 340.

As always, Marcel is correct; the berlinetta is 0132, a resident of SoCal for many years, hidden away, but lately coming out a bit.

This is 0132A in 1953 when owned by Doheny.

Thank you, I appreciate the information. There were not too many Ferraris attending the club meets in Manila, so the 340A was quite a treat when it appeared again. Now I know a bit more about Barchettas.

Here is another photograph of #144 A, taken Sunday at dusk. That would have been the 1st day of spring (Saturday was the spring equinox), but this is the tropics, so that was the beginning of summer.

What is the device in the middle of 0132A's dash? And would that flat-topped steering wheel (in vogue now) have been found in other Ferraris then?

If my dates are right, both 0132A and 0144A were manufactured in 1951. It is unusual that Johnny Ysmael, who owned both, would have bought them in the same year. Or perhaps he wanted a barchetta and a coupe? There is a theory that 0144A was originally a coupe, later rebodied as a barchetta, but why would Ysmael buy 2 coupes?.

Ysmael, a wealthy Philippine businessman, was diagnosed with TB in 1949 and sent to Switzerland to recuperate. Instead, the story goes, he bought the Ferraris and drove around the US and Europe until he was forced to return home by his illness. He died in early 1952, perhaps not even a year after he took delivery of the two Ferraris (and not enough time to have had 0144A rebodied).

Several details suggest that the Touring body of 0144A may be original, not a rebody. I think that the rebodying story is based on that 0132A and 0144A were confused with each other early on as both were delivered new to Rome - and Ysmael really owned 0132A only. It would be very interesting to find more details about the early history of these cars. Best wishes, Kare

Thank you, Kare. I promised Bert I would try to find out more about the Ferraris of Ysmael when I get back (I am presently in Cappadocia).

You said Ysmael owned 0132A only? The car more identified with Ysmael here is 0144A. He sold it to another Filipino (Amado Araneta), who then sold it to the present owner. Bert lists the 1st owner of 0144A as one Adriano Marzoni, so perhaps Ysmael didn't buy it new but bought it from Marzoni (Marzoni is a dealer?). Considering Ysmael died shortly after the maufacture dates of 0132A and 0144A, I am surprised actually that he had time to bring one car to Manila and drive it here. But apparently he did.

0132A's interior is quite unusual, and that could be a cigarette dispenser indeed on the dash.

    Regards,

    Andres

First purchased by J.Amado (Amading) Araneta in Rome with and through the offices of my father Bernardino (Dino) Campiglio, an Italian businessman living in the Philippines at that time. Dad was gifted with a Vacheron-Constantine watch for his friendship and assistance. This car in no way associated with the Ysmael 340 as Louiey Ysmael will attest.
