No seat time in the 500 but they were nicknamed The Hammer for a reason. AMG Benz before everyone knew who AMG was. I think they are pretty rare. The are also from the era when Benz built a good car that lasted for ever.

IIRC Porsche gave Benz quite a hand in the development of the car, I think they even built them for Benz, but I'm sure someone else can confirm that.

Solid car, parts are cheap and the engine is strong. A keeper as long as NO rusts..
Spent a year behind a '03 E55. Nothing to complain but the gas bills and your '93 would come with less gizmos that will go wrong such as air shocks, ESP etc etc.
worth to buy and restore. Check if its grey import??

There was one for sale from a guy local to me, Ventura, CA, that was a 150K or so car IIRC. These cars have always intreaged(sp?) me as well, I haven't seen any that are below 150K for sale, not a car that is resold at low mileage it seems. The front fenders being bowed out are so intoxicating, as is the Porsche pedigree, cancels out the MBZ boring interiors of the 80s/90s.

230k? Wow. That is a LOT of miles, but ya never know. If she runs well, for that
price - and most stuff works, go for it. At least you'll know the depreciation is just
    about done anyway.

That era 500E were indeed great cars.... my only E500 experience was a new 2003,
that turned into a piece of garbage FAST. But that was the story with those years.
Now drive a 2008 E350 and love it, but totally different thing.

The "Hammer" refers to a car built by AMG in 1986, before Mercedes bought half the company (and then the other half), not to the Mercedes 500E, which came along 5 years later. The Hammer was a 300E sedan that AMG stuffed a 5.6 litre V8 into, upgraded the brakes, suspension, etc. It was billed as the world's fastest sedan in that era. It is indeed rare, as only a very few were built.

Hartmut Feyhl, one of the leads at AMG in developing the Hammer, subsequently came to the U.S. and opened his own company, RENNtech. I have a couple of RENNtech/Mercedes and have spoken with Feyhl about the Hammer a number of times.

The 500E/E500 is quite a special car in its own right, having essentially been hand built by Porsche for Mercedes. I think about 13,000 of the 500E/E500 were built. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe automotive publishing luminary David E. David said that he would "...drive this car (the 500E) to the moon, if I could...", he liked it so much. I have a couple of email messages I exchanged with Davis about the 500E that I could send you, and perhaps some articles about the car. Somewhere I have a reference to a website that was just for 500E/E500 fanatics. PM me if interested.

I got one for my parents. At that price its a steal. They had great engines, in good shape it could probably hang w a 355 in a drag race

    Great stealth cruiser

    Great car if no rust.

Porsche did all the suspension tuning under contract to MB.

    Stock SL500 engine.......lotsa torque.

For $3,500 you can sell it for parts and probably make money.

Ok, since this thread has been resurrected, does anyone know of a good one for sale in or near California?

Ask Mark if he'll sell his. He just moved to Hawaii and may not have shipped that car. There are still a few Mercedes behind the house, didn't notice if the 500e was there.

Check the wiring harnesses (engine and body). Wiring insulation was a biodegradable soybean....which, not surprisingly, rots right off the car! Sounds like a decent deal as long as the wiring is A-OK.

That's one hell of a bump!

Not to go completely offtopic, I found another BBS-bodykit-fitted MB. This time a W124 with bodykit and BBS wheels. It is a 300, with a manual (!!!) gearbox. How it compares to the 500, I guess it is to compare a Lorinser 500 with a E63 nowadays.
