As you guys know,I have a virus on my computer. To see what it is in detail, check here http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278144 I now need some free removal software. What do you guys recomend?
Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ AVG: http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php I use them all and they do the job. Jedi
Yes they typically do. The three I've listed are just my preferences... but I can say from personal experience, on over 15 computers I have to maintain, that they in fact do the job and all are free. I'm sure there are others, but these 3 should at least take care of whatever is plaguing you now. Jedi
I installed Malwarebytes, and did a scan. It came up with 281 infected files. However,it could only remove 276?
I installed AVG,and I think that did it. The error message and the WD Message doesnt pop up. Plus WD says that my computer is running normally.
Just cuz only a handful of folks use a Mac (yes, I'm one of them - I run ALL major OS'es - Vista, 7, XP, Ubuntu Linux, on multiple boxes, + Snow Leopard, both on a MacBook 13.3 as well as a Hackintosh) is the reason the guys who write viruses focus on Windows. Just be glad Mac isn't as popular - there is NOTHING innate to that OS that is superior as far as attacks - just not a big target. Trust me - if Mac were 90% of the installed base, Mac's would be the target, not windows. Just sayin'... but it's fact. and I'm NOT trying to start an OS war - PLEASE don't take it that way Jedi
+1 However, I do believe that Mac's are inherently "somewhat" more secure - We don't run as root all the time which seems to be what many Windows user do (incorrectly of course.) That's not a criticism of the OS per-se but the long known fact that uneducated *users* are the biggest threat - How many threads are on here with "please help me get rid of XXX?" Me! Start an OS war? Nah! Cheers, Ian PS - Glad the OP got it fixed - good job guys! I am however a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be one "definitive" solution to this nausea - Running 3 different apps suggests there's still an opening for the "killer app" in this area (?)
Sure is an opening - I was using AVG, WD and Comodo - still got zapped *yesterday & just started from scratch a few minutes ago. *Embarrassing, I know.
If you are really bored you can remove the virus without any apps But yeah the 3 links by Jedi pretty much cover 99% of attacks. Also you should always remember to keep windows up to date, set it on automatic or if you have a *cough* edition, use autopatcher
Try Avast as well (even now after your initial cleanup). http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download The two nice things about Avast that I haven't seen on most AV is that it has a boot-time scan and password protection. The boot-time scan is great since that allows files to be removed/quarantined easily vs going through the Windows normal environment. Not sure how strong the password protection area is from being overwritten with files that hijack the AV but it's better than nothing at the moment.
Another new free option is Mircrosoft's own antivirus software: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ This has been working good so far for me, used to use AVG, and switched to this with Win7.
Thanks for the tip, I've been disappointed with my Norton and just switched to MSSE. Immediately noticed that webpages load much faster. Still using Malwarebytes and Spybot along with COMODO's firewall as well.
Avast is good, I used to use AVG, but one particularly nasty one got past AVG about a year ago. After reloading the OS from scratch, I switched to Avira. I have not yet seen anything get past the combo of Avira, Malwarebytes, superantispyware, and hijack this. All of these are free apps and will do the job you need admirably.
