Paul, they do wear out prior to failure. Even with hardened races and balls the tolerances expand over time and then the thing makes noise and results in excessive movement in the driveline. In a car with tired/worn CVs you really feel it when getting on and off the gas - you'll feel sort of a rocking motion back and forth, and it makes applying the power clunky when there's a lot of wear. Interestingly, the "rebuild" service of these things typically is limited to replaceing worn balls. In other words, the race isn't touched - after all, what do you do with a worn race? - it's just repacked with grease and a replacement ball or two (or three) in place of worn ones. Frankly, it's not a very good "rebuild" because, as you've shown, the races wear as well as the balls. For this reason I've generally bought new CVs rather than replacing with "rebuilt" as the new CVs generally aren't that much more expensive than "rebuilt." Some money can be saved by just buying the CV itself rather than the whole axle - the CV joint itself is often common to many axles. Lobro is a major supplier and someone with a Lobro catelogue could probably help find what non f-cars use the same CV joint as the 308 (for a lot less money than f-car prices).
just specify that you want all new races and ball in the rebuild. What do a set of complete new axles go for in 2010 dollars?
The CV only has four parts - the inner race, the outer race, balls and a cage. So if your rebuild requires new races and you replace the balls, I'd think that you may as well also have the cage replaced in the rebuild as well, you know since you are in there. It's like my grandad's old hammer. I've kept it to honor him, but I've had to replace the handle twice and the head once.
Quick check of Dennis McCann's site shows $755 per side with the joints. He lists the CV joint individually at $125, so roughly $500ish for the axle shaft. He does not list the axle shafts individually. FWIW, YMMV JIM

I wouldn't be surprised if Dennis had the best prices (he certainly did on the clutch kit, dist caps and hardware I ordered last week and received a few days after), but thought maybe someone had recently found an 'unconventional' i.e. non-ferrari source (although a quick seach for 930 axles which I heard may be the same show similar pricing). I misspoke in my last post - the races (i.e. either outer race of the inner race/axle) were not replaced, only the cages, balls and boots. cheers
Hi Jim (and others) Just picked up this thread as I need to replace the seal on the differential housing as I have leaks running up the taper of the drive flange and oil is being spun off the cv joints - I guess summer is when you get the leaks. I've determined it's not escaping grease or a leaking spline seal by degreasing the whole joint then driving - stopped and caught the oil lines running midway "up" the taper from the differential towards the bolts. CV Bolts are tight so that's step one - but I'm waiting on an 8mm tool to arrive. Did you remove the axle because you knew you needed to do the CV joints ? mine all seem good with no leaking grease, so I figure I can just wire the shaft out of the way whilst I work on the flange seal. Next is to remove the flange and seal. Did you do this on your job ? Looks straight forward, but it's always better if someone else did it and took photos first thanks Lee ps, great opening shot of the drive flange - now I know what to expect once I'm past the bolts. Lee, I did pull the flange out to inspect the seal. Mine is (was) fine. I had to use my impact wrench to loosen the bolt. The axles came out because it was easiest to get them out and replace/repack the CV boots on my workbench. Personally, I would be prepared to do the CV joints while you are in there. The parts are inexpensive and you'll have them mostly apart anyway, unless you know they were done recently. Good luck! JIM
Incidentally, I've found the Lobro cross reference for the CVs (same as used on porsche and one or two others) and they're $69 new each. Out of respect for online f-car retailers here and elsewhere I won't post the data but just pm if there's anyone here looking to save a few bucks. The axle shafts are also a common shaft used on a few different european cars - new ones can be had on ebay for less than $75 bucks. There was no wear on the splines of my axle shafts so I replaced the four CVs and reinstalled all for a total of about $300 bucks. You can easily tell if a CV is worn out - you can feel it, or you can measure it if you want to be more precise. I certainly can't imagine putting a repacked, but worn out, CV back into a car.
