An angry old fool who just bought a historic Porsche from his hospital bed at the Amelia auction for a cool $1.7m.
Everything he said in that article is true ....
There's a thread on Planet f1 applauding the IRL for having their own Youtube channel (which F1 completely ignores)
IRL threads there used to be non-existant....

Let's remember too that back in Sir Stirling's day F-1
drivers were being killed off at such an alarming rate
that The Vatican wanted racing banned (which Switzerland did)
and drivers would routinely win Grands Prix by laps, not
    seconds, laps...

Interesting info about the Vatican. Guess the Swiss went back on their word in '82 ;).

The whole push to ban motor racing occurred after the horrible accident at Lemans in '55, where driver Pierre Levegh and 85 spectators died when Levegh's Mercedes 300SLR drove up the back of Lance Macklin's Austin Healy and flew into the crowd. Several countries, including France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland, banned motor racing for a time. Switzerland's ban is still in place, but allows for the holding of timed events, such as drag racing, hill climbs and rallying.

I thought the return to F1 by the Swiss was due to Clay. Wrong. He was gone by then. It can't be far off one the first reports I read in my brothers' hand-me-down R/T by Rob Walker ;).

well there was that and then the mille miglia where one ferrari was involved with I believe it was 12 deaths, bringing the grand total to 16 for Ferrari for the year. All of Ferrari's promised "spring team" drivers were dead. That was truly when the vatican wanted to banish racing. it was because so many Italians died...

Is this a joke or are you truly out of touch ?
The "old geezer" survived an era where the odds were stacked against one. Where they left next of kin whereabouts info and made their peace before each race.
    A little respect.

Indeed, but that was 1957. Switzerland had already banned racing in '55. Roots' statement makes it sound like the Vatican's pressure to ban the sport was part of the reason for the Swiss ban, which isn't true.

    Never a truer word!.

As for the article, I agree with pretty much with what he said. (I don't want to see shortcuts introduced though and how would a reverse grid really work?, surely the drivers would just go as slowly as possible to get pole position?).
