Is this an undertaking for a reasonable and prudent person? I am looking to make a track car for myself and was wondering if this is an unreasonable and stupid thing to think about doing to a ferrari?

    thoughts?

cheaper just to get a 348 Challenge. by the time you took a "cheap" 308 and made it an OK track car you would still be slower than a 348 Challenge and have much more money into it.

Would anyone know anyone with a 348 they want to get rid of for a reasonable price?

Anyone here do any kind of track racing? I suppose a cheaper alternative like BMW, or Porsche would be more realistic than a Ferrari.

    Corvette Z06 is IT

    You can get a C6 in high $30s or a C5 in the $20s

These cars can keep up with lots of exotics in stock form and parts are MUCH cheaper

With a few mods they can take down the most exotic rides

A lot of us race, including Rob and Mousecatcher. As Mousecatcher pointed out, the use of the words "reasonable," "prudent" and "budget" in a thread about building a track car leaves us shaking our heads.

It would help to know your budget and how you want to use the car. But I think a big honking NO is the simple answer to your original question about taking a street Ferrari and turning it into a proper track car:

"Is this an undertaking for a reasonable and prudent person?"

I don't know about that. Being closely involved with SCCA Touring racing I can tell you the Vettes are a nightmare on costs. Yes, the used market is full of C5 and C6 race cars (really not much more than a 348 C though), but the real gotcha is how easy they break (especially the C6's). The transmissions, the engines, the clutches, those cars aren't put together as well as Ferraris for high load-high heat use like Ferraris.

For real economy and a car that will beat most exotics on the track, go for a Spec Miata. You can sign up for Mazda's Racer Program and get all parts at below what the dealer can even buy them at.

I agree with Rob my buddy has a 08 C6 Z06 that he tracks regularly that has had over 40k in warranty work done. Believe it or not his engine blew because the dry sump couldn't keep up in the corners. (They supposally have fixed this problem on 09 and 2010 models) His car is basically stock and was on stock runcrap tires.

He also went thru a tranny and had some other smaller problems.

With that said it was all covered under warranty.

While we're at it... Is there a private jet I can use for my family that won't break the bank? ;)

It seems to me that this is the most realistic option for now. Thanks!

Go out and by a nice 360 Challenge for around 100k. It will not be the fastest car on the track but I have found mine to be a very robust car and needless to say you have one of the most elegant and prestigious cars on the grid. Also I must say in comparison to my 2008 Porsche Cup Car that the Ferrari is MUCH easier to drive and very forgiving.
    Just my 2 cents

"Low-cost" and "track" don't fit well together. I've been racing Chump Car and 24Hours of Lemons. Our little Miata was FREE. A race weekend costs about $1000. Brakes, tires, fuel, food, trailering, safety gear, entry fees, etc. all adds up. Our 275k mile Miata has been very robust. We shredded one engine because of a plugged radiator, but other than that we have put on about 7500 miles of hard racing on that thing with just tires, brakes and duct tape. It just keeps on going...

Another alternative is a Lotus (Elise, Exige, 2-11). Not that expensive to run and great fun.

Edit: Cheap is a relative term. What kind of budget do you have in mind? This will help us help! :)

elise maybe, but exige and especially 2-11 are definitely not cheap, esp if you crash them. plastic body panels = replace only, no repairs. and the gearboxes are junk.
