I see this ad in craigslist for an 88 328 and the dealer claims it's "a vast improvement" over the 308 ? Anyone care to fill me in on what this "vast improvement" was ? thanks Andy 1988 Ferrari 328 GTS Spyder Identification # ZFFXA20A3J007S553 The Classic V8 Ferrari! The 328s were a vast improvement over the hugely popular 308 series. Ferrari produced the 328 from 1985-189 and only 6068 GTS were built for worldwide market. This Car is a beautiful 1 owner example sold new in Illinois and later lived in Arizona. The previous owner maintained the car at Lake Fores Sportscars and Scottsdale Ferrari Aston-Martin. It shows 41,470 documented miles and comes with an extensive file of service history from new. Having its last major belt service at 39,100 miles in late 2005 by Scottsdale Ferrari.
Having owned 3 of each, I would say 328s are an improvement, especially systems like cooling, ignition and electrical but "vast" is certainly overstating the case. Dave
depends on comparing to which modell. to the early 308 i think there quite some improvement. To the last 308, the QV there isn't much difference. Sellers-talk indeed
The 308/328 line was quite literally a process of evolution. What the seller isn't telling you is that the QV also has several of the improvements (improved bearings, etc.) that went into the 328. That's why, if you're looking to use a Ferrari as a daily driver, the later 328s are some of the most reliable cars Ferrari ever made.
To me that's like saying that a peach is just a vastly improved plum. They are actually very different cars and I like them both. I would put it more like that the 328 is an evolution of the 308 in form and function. But I'd LOVE to have a nice QV sitting in my garage next to my 328 - love them BOTH. Jedi
Over the 308QV it's a marginal difference at best.......over an earlier 308 GTSi it's huge........so that's how I look at it anyway. He's sorta right.
Have driven all three. Honestly .... I could not tell the driving difference with the blindfold off or on. [Relax. I am a Jedi Knight in advanced training]. That is why I did not pay the premium and bouhgt a lowly GTSi. Same car for MUCH Less $$$$$.
There was a post about this awhile back by Rifledriver I think. One of the big updates in the 328 was the HVAC.
The 328 has a much better cigarette lighter, and a really cool mirror switch out of a BMW. It's really transforms the car and is a vast improvement over the crummy old 308.... If the seller was selling a 308 he'd say "the 308 is the original and iconic design, and therefore vastly more desirable than other ferraris..." Dealers just think they need to say dumb things like that...as if it's part of justifying their presence (and added cost) in the transaction....
Vastly improved, well having owned both I would say improved from the 308 QV, just like the 308QV was improved from the 308gti. Call it what you want, the 328 all around is a better car. Power, HVAC, cooling system/radiator, all around interior layout and that's including the BMW mirror control unit. Evolution...
It's due for a belt service. The new Honda Accord is a vast imrovement over both cars, so what. Get the one you want and enjoy in good health.
It was a vast improvement. Better beefier trans, better suspension. The brakes are a big improvement and the parking brake will actually hold the car. The engine had much better power especially in the low and mid range. Much better HVAC. The cooling system does not try to boil over on every 100 degree day. So, lets see Better transmission Better suspension Better engine Better brakes Better cooling system Better HVAC Better ignition system Build quality was night and day You guys are right, almost no difference at all Give me a F'n break.
Comparing a late 328 with ABS to a carbed 308 is like comparing the Saturn 5 to the Shuttle... They both fly, and rumble.....but features are totally different!!
+1 there man. Build quality is totally hit and miss with 308s, although I do prefer the look of an early 308 interior. Much more classic IMO. The tranny gearing with the 328 is the only thing I really don't like. 5th gear is way too short IMO.
I can sure vouch for the cooling system on the 328 - bumper to bumper traffic in Las Vegas at 108 degrees outside air temp in Aug 08 with the ac on. Lots of sitting at lights and the temp gauge would get to about a needle's width above the midpoint, the fans would come on and the temp quickly drop to several needle-widths below the mid mark, and the fans would shut off. Of course I have no idea of the actual temps involved but it's obvious the cooling system can easily deal with pretty severe conditions.
In addition to these (which I agree) I thought the 328 interior was also better. I also thought the engine had a lot more useable torque. There is no question the 328 is a better machine. I guess the question is whether it' "vastly superior". The funny thing is that, for me, in the looks department, the 308 was better. But, each to their own.
Although, IMO, the beefy radiator upgrades for the 308 will make the cooling system a non-issue, I can say that the 308's (including QVs) and the only 328 I have driven are vastly different. The 328 FEELS like it accelerates much quicker and I think it looks better than the US 308. Euro 308's are stiff competition...
I've never driven a QV but I did own a gtbi. I'm sure the 328 is an evolution of the 308 in the performance department; the numbers don't lie and we have experts here with real world experience confirming the advantages of the 328. To what degree these differences are important is a matter of personal opinion. I think 308's are beautiful cars, but to me the 328 is much better looking - inside and out.
