Steve's gearbox saga Volume 2: Removal

March 30th & 31st 2010. Total labor time 5.5 Hrs.

Ernie already wrote the tutorial, I followed it, and that's exactly how I managed to pull this off, and i'm handling the pics

After this is all over, I will spend some time on a more detailed description of how I did this.
And of course I will always be available to the Brotherhood for advice and tips! And perhaps even a hand helping brothers remove theirs!

 

We're gonna make a Stooge out of you yet Steve. Those pics for your parking break cable short cut are the bee's knees. That little trick will save a lot of time for the next guy. Awesome job bro.

 

You may have gotten luck, and only need to replace the bearings. Be sure to pull of the side covers and check those bearings, especially the one on the oil pump side.

How do the teeth on the gears look?

 

so far, so good........I am still amazed at the help from the "Brotherhood". Karma boys, you will be rewarded.

 

This is truly amazing. The Brotherhood rocks....just think of how much cash you saved so far with the work you have done yourself (and that doesn't even include the volunteering of the Stooges!!)

 

Reference the 348 WSM. If I recall correctly from my gearbox rebuild, this is the 1st item listed at assembly, hence the last to come out. I believe the entire gearbox must be disassembled to access this part. Good luck in your project!

 

probably order all four because the retaining rings are probably eaten up too. Hopefully the retaining ring lands in the box are not destroyed. Those parts do go into the box first. But if you can see them you got a chance at removing them with a blind puller. I have never tried to get at those bearings insitu but it looks like you can do it with the right tools. Also what does the input shaft look like and what does the inside of the hollow clutch shaft look like? You could have beaten both those shafts. Also what is the concentricity of the input shaft? And look for nicks. That is a hardened shaft and nicks can be stress risers for future shaft fracture failure. We know the clutchshaft has runout. If B has a used clutchshaft and gear and used input shaft I would strongly consider using those. If you do decide to use your old input shaft at least micrometer the bearing area on your shaft vs. B's shaft. You could get lucky and prusian blue the Bruce clutch shaft gear and it may mate ok with the companion gear in the box. If not then you have to replace gears in a set and the box has to come apart. otherwise you will be using B's shaft and your runout clutchshaft and gear. Make sense? I'm sure when EB read this they will understand. If you want to use your old shaft and the bearing area is nicked up you can have a machine shop sleeve the bearing area up. such repairs are done in high wear areas like we have all seen the line that forms on the camshaft seal area where the lip of the seal rides on the shaft .

EB does one of you guys have a tool to remove the clutchshaft? If no please call me and pick up my especial tool #13 aka attrezzo di rimozione del pozzo di frizione. Add slide hammer and propane torch to your tool list.

Steve since they will be using a torch on your box you better pickup supplies for Banana Foster...

BANANAS FOSTER


A quintessential New Orleans dessert, and a favorite among most locals. If you're a visitor to our city, don't feel like you're ordering a clichéd tourist dish. We love this one too.

* 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick)
* 1 cup dark brown sugar
* 2 bananas
* 2 ounces banana liqueur
* 4 ounces dark rum
* Ground cinnamon
* Vanilla ice cream (optional)

This dish really should not be prepared in the kitchen. It must be performed, in front of your guests. Use a chafing dish, and some kind of portable heat like Sterno. Don't be sloppy, and keep a fire extinguisher handy. There's no need to burn the house down just for dessert, but this really must be done right. I learned to cook this dish from Chef Joe Cahn at the New Orleans School of Cooking, and he spun dire tales of what befell those who dared sequester themselves in the kitchen when making Bananas Foster. Seriously, bad gris-gris will befall you if you deprive your guests of the spectacle. Plus, they'll talk for years about how cool you are to have made this for their dessert.

First, you should make some preparations. Peel a thin strip of peel from the bananas, and use your knife to slice the banana crossways into coins. Then replace the banana peel so that it looks untouched (as best as you can, anyway). This way, you can pretend to "peel" your bananas, and dump them into the put already cut, as if by magic. Cheesy, you ask? Well, it still looks cool, particularly if you're really nonchalant when you do this in front of your guests. If you insist, you can slice the bananas the classical way, quartering them by slicing thm lengthwise and then in half. I still think the other way is cooler.

Put your ground cinnamon into some kind of non-standard container, or even a little muslin bag, the better to "convince" your guests that it is, in fact, not cinnamon but voodoo dust, scraped from the tomb of Marie Laveau at midnight on All Soul's Day ... some kind of delightfully corny crap like that. Also, I recommend taking a cinnamon stick and grinding it fresh in a spice or coffee grinder instead of using pre-ground cinnamon. Sieve the result through a tea ball strainer to remove the larger pieces which won't grind finely. This will maximize the fresh, aromatic cinnamon flavor. If you use your coffee grinder, it'll also make your coffee taste great.

Now, to business ...

Melt the butter and add the brown sugar to form a creamy paste. Let this mixture caramelize over the heat for about 5 minutes. Stir in the banana liqueur. Heat until the liquor is warmed, about three minutes. Add the bananas, add the rum (preferably warmed), then ignite with a flourish and cook for about 1 - 2 minutes. Here's the showiest way to do this:

Using a long, bent-handled ladle, scoop up some of the warm liquor. Hold it a foot or two above the chafing dish and ignite the liquor in the ladle. VERY CAREFULLY, pour the liquor into the dish. A column of flame will descend from the ladle into the dish, which will ignite with a marvelous *poof*! Keep a pal nearby, subtly wielding a fire extinguisher. Try not to become a human torch in the process.

Otherwise, if you're too chicken (and I would never make fun of you for being too chicken to mess around with flaming alcohol), just ignite the rum in the chafing dish. It's safer.

Agitate to keep the flame burning, and add a few pinches of "voodoo dust" to the flame. The cinnamon will sparkle orange in the blue flame, and looks really neat.

Let the flames go out. Serve over ice cream if you wish, but some hardcores like me like it just like it is. Yum.

Variations: one may substitute any fruit for this dish that has a correspondingly flavored liqueur -- peaches, pears, whatever.

As far as the bearing, its still basically intact, but it looks like the casing is separating in micro-thin layers... one of which was in tiny pieces on my drain plug, there is another one actually laying on the shaft totally unmolested.

From what I can see of the shaft, it looks fine and straight and slides back and forth thru the bearing quite smoothly and freely. As far as the hollow section of the shaft, I can't see that, maybe because the throwout bearing is still on there?

All the gears and synchro's that I can see are clean and perfect, I rotated the big ring gear and all the other gears move with it, so I was able to see all the teeth on all the gears. They are all clean and good as new.

As far as Bananas Foster... you so crazy!!

to those of you who may be concerned about my gratitude toward the stooges and everyone else who has reached out to me over the past couple weeks....

I realize most of you don't know me from Adam, but I am a giver, and its exceptionally rare that anyone ever goes out of their way to do anything for me, its basically an "all give, and get nothing back" lifestyle. You guys will never realize how profoundly humbled and overwhelmed I am by all your support, and the impending efforts of Ernie, Bruce and FBB helping me with this. All I can do for them right now, is make sure their visit to Vegas is a positive experience, and that they have everything thy need to be happy and comfortable. And in return for their help, I will always be there for them, and I will perpetuate the pay-it-forward tradition of the 348 Brotherhood with loyalty, honesty, and absolute integrity.

Aside from my immediate family, there is only ONE person on this earth that I have ever been able to truly count on, and that's my best friend Phil. There is nothing we wouldn't do for each other, and we never keep score. He is the only person I would truly trust with my life, and that would never hurt me or screw me over for anything. Phil is the one who helped me get the GB out, and took all the pics... and theres is NO WAY I could have done it without him!!
This experience has certainly proven that the 348 brotherhood is more profound than I could have ever imagined possible, and for the 1st time, I honestly FEEL like I have 100's of brothers worldwide! A million thanks to ALL of you for your support and encouragement... I love all you guys, and I will ALWAYS "be there" for all of you.
