    Couldn't find any specifics on how tight to make them so I snugged them pretty good. I guess the obvious answer is that if I see a leak at the filter or at the bottom of the pain around the plug then it is not tight enough, true?

    Normally a new crush washer is installed at the drain plug.....

    No need to get crazy on the filter either, most of them have it on the side, "1/2 turn after gasket meets the surface" or something to that effect.....

    You are braver than I am. I would be afraid to do it myself with the oil filter being over the clutch.

    Is the crush washer something you can just pick up in Autozone/Pep Boys? If so any size/kind specifically? I have a several oil filters for future changes but don't think I have any crush washers for the drain plug... thanks.

    Tell me about it! I had changed my oil 1/2 dozen times & never had any oil leak out of the filter. That was til the time I had the timing marks cover off & an ounce or two of oil leaked onto the clutch causing it to fail.

    Oh, come on, guys. Put a piece of plastic down with some absorbant towels on top and under the filter base, and unscrew the darn filter. This is NOT a big deal. It's a dang car. If you've let the filter drain back, there should be very little oil that comes out of it, and any that does should easily be caught by the towels.

    If I had to bet I would say Ricambi. I hope you are using an UFI or Baldwin filter for the anti drain down feature.

    I got 3 UFI filters from SportAuto when I picked up the car and Tom made sure I had a new copper crush washer taped to each filter box. So that went fine. When I pulled the old (Fram) filter after letting every thing drain for 20 mins there was barely a drop or two that came out. I just put paper towels around the area and had a zip lock baggie ready to drop the old filter in. I don't think I spilled anything anywhere. Just wasn't sure how tight to make it, but based on Big Tex's comment I think I got it right.


    2 hours and a little dirt everywhere I have a happy horse with some new redline in her and a proper UFI filter on top.

    I am struggling to make sure I have her filled up propoerly though. Hard to read the dipstick when the oil is that clean. I put 2 gallons in plus approx 1/4 of another gallon. I will check it again tomorrow.

    By the way, oil temp hovered around 200-210. (It is 80 degrees here today.)
    Water temp was mid line (190?)
    Oil pressure was 75-80 with tach at 3500-4000 cruising.

    All seemed OK. Hopefully I have enough oil in her.

    Sounds 'happy" to me....the only other thing to know is the two marks on the dipstick are 'two quarts' apart.....

    Thanks Boss. I have had lot's of cars and I can normally handle a dipstick, but I swear the level is either just at the bottom of the stick or at the top of the normal line. Hard to tell what was smudged on and what the real level is. I am going to get a little quart measurer and confirm that I put a quart in her from the gallon container I have. If I didn't put enough in I am going to add and see if the reading becomes more obvious. If anything she might be a touch low.

    Go run it awhile and it'll darken........on your later car the marks may be different, do you have the Books????

    Yeah, the manual says 9 quarts (10 liters) so I think I am pretty close.

    The NAPA crush washer works, but the ones from Ricambi or the FNA dealer are a bit thicker, and have an easier to detect "give" when they yield or crush. I just always be sure to buy a few each time I buy some filters. (get a couple extras in case you lose one or need to help a buddy) :)

    Be sure you are checking correctly per the owners manual. It does very a bit by year, but usually you need to wait 5 minutes or so, with a standard wet sump 308/328. I agree checking is kind of confusing, and the reading seems to vary depending on which side of the stick you read from....

    Get yourself a pair of $3.00 magnifying glasses. They come in very handy.
