I was wondering if anyone knows of a good way to remove the "blue jean" discoloration from tan colored leather seats.

That reminds me of a similar (and funny) situation.

My Father was a Dentist, and we all know how everyone "sweats" the idea of going to the Dentist --- well, literally some of his more anxious patients would sweat through their clothes while in the chair, and over the years a lot of staining was left behind (until he started using disposable slip covers). We tried everything to clean these dye stains, and nothing worked --- this was on vinyl, BTW, so you can scrub much harder than you can with leather.

I hope one of detailing experts will chime in with a solution, but my guess is you will have to strip through the base dye on the leather, and then re-dye with leatherique (or some similar product).

Human sweat is rather acidic, and really allows the dye from clothing to penetrate deep into leather, unfortunately.

    Good Luck.

Maybe that Meguiar's leather cleaner? Tan seats and blue jeans are a bad combo if you want to avoid the blueing.

What he said, though unfortunately a little late for the OP.

Blue jeans and light-colored leather don't mix.

Check out high end leather sofa/sectional manufacturers for their cleaner products. I have a very light leather sectional and it turns blue very easily. The stuff I use works miracles... It's from Bo Concept.

I heard that rubbing bare lady skin on it could help. I doubt it, but it sounds like fun.

    So... moisturized lady wipes? :D

Someone mentioned Lexol. I have used their cleaner with good success on ivory color top coated leather seats, but I don't think I'd trust it on tanned leather.

    Malibu,

Try the cleaner and conditioner (orange and brown bottles) from Lexol. That should take car of it. If not, Leatherique is another great product, just a little more time consuming. I'll be working a car in Malibu next week. Let me know if you'd like me to stop by and take a look at it.

I haven't tried this, but I know it works without damaging anything after my 3 year old took a permanent market to one of our leather sofas.

    Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

Give it a shot. It might do the trick. It took a little bit of scrubbing, but after the 3 or forth wipe, the marker came off without any damage to the leather, and not a trace of the marker.

I've been in the cleaning business for over twenty-five years, so I have some experience with this situation. The biggest problem with this scenario is leather is very porous, it allows tanners to make leather a deep rich black color, if needed. The other part of this situation is we have blue indigo dye that has gotten on a light colored very porous leather material. As others have stated above, you can try Lexol or any other conditioner on the leather. Any of these products will work to some degree, but probably not entirely. Two other things you may try is to use a non-aerosol hair spray on the area, or rubbing alcohol, but before attempting anything of this nature, please try in an inconspicuous area. There may be adverse results so please, test, test, test.
The best thing to help prevent this from happening in the future is to liberally apply leather conditioners every 3 months to the seats. This will help minimize the transfer of dyes to the very porous surface of leather. YMMV

I have tried it and it works better than any other cleaner I have tried. Seems to dry it quite a bit so apply a good moisturizer/conditioner afterward.

I have been using Leatherique cleaner and conditioner on my Ferraris for years. The leather on a Ferrari is not plastic coated on as on almost all other leather interiors. It has natural ingredients that soak into the pores and actually condition the leather as well as clean it. If you had been using this on a regular basis I doubt your seats would have stained or at least would have cleaned a lot more easily.

Take care when using the Magic Eraser on leather or other delicate surfaces. Though they feel soft, they are abrasive. Prolonged or aggressive use may make a visible change in tone or texture.
