Dreamteam Brawn/Haug/Schumacher not working?

I see the two as very similar with an emphasis on how much more difficult it is to be a competent fighter pilot.

Both seated in a cramped cockpit.
Both subjected to G forces (far more in a fighter jet obviously)
Both required to view multiple targets and react according to their positioning
Both required to make on-the-fly changes to their equipment
Both require remarkable reaction time

what is so different other than one is in the air? Am I missing something?

 

Why aren't all F1 seats occupied by ex-fighter pilots then? Given the difference in compensation it would seem like a no-brainer...

 

For my own knowledge, how long are fighter pilots pulling 8 gs? 5 seconds, 10 seconds?

Point is, both require a huge amount of conditioning and physical conditioning, more so with a aerobatic pilot (Patti Wagstaff) or a fighter pilot, and those guys are pushing 50+ doing that stuff.

It's asinine to say, "Schuey is too old and slow in the brain now". I went to college at Berklee college of music in Boston, and the finest musicians were all in their prime in their 40s. The only difference I see is being a pro musician does not really require one to be in the best of shape. Mental agility must be there though, which it is. Itsac Perlman, Yoyo Mah, Michael Brecker, Canonball Adderley, Joshua Bell, the list goes on.

 

Not to go off topic too much here:
A jet with thrust vectoring can put a fighter pilot through a hell of a lot. It can be a snap from 8 seconds of 6-7gs to -2gs back to +4gs depending on what one is required to do. It is no question the aircraft is more capable than the human body. Those top gun guys are quite insane though.

 

Yes. Musicians have longevity and are masters. Completely different than athletics like auto racing.

Look at auto racing. Pretty much a young man's sport. Think I read somewhere that Schumi was the oldest F1 driver in history. If not the oldest, one of the oldest. That works against him as reaction times slow with age for everyone. In a sport where tenths of a second are huge, this a critical factor to success. Not saying he can not win, it is just the odds are stacked against him. He who makes the fewest mistakes has a better chance of winning. 1/10 in the wrong place can cost you the race. Have to have concentraion, coordination and experience. Two out of three is not good enough.

 

As a staunch supporter of the market system I'm tempted to say that it IS that easy.

IMO, Britney was in her prime in her teens. I really don't care for the present one.

 

One major difference I see with a fighter pilot vs F1 driver is...

F1 drivers have to maximize performance for every lap for two hours or so. They have to hit every apex almost perfectly, brake at the right time, accelerate at the right time. And they have to be able to react to changes in the track, the weather and the other drivers around them. All this while keeping the car at the limit. this takes tremendous concentration over two hours or so.

Fighter pilots have to be able to perform for much shorter periods of time. A dogfight may last seconds or perhaps minutes, but not for a couple of hours. While F1 is dangerous, you don't have someone trying to kill you. And a fighter pilot usually has fellow pilots who are trying to work together as a team to destroy the enemy. F1 drivers on the same "team" more often than not are trying to beat each other.

While there are obviously things which the two activities have in common. Both take guts. Both take concentration. Both take stamina. Both take quick thinking and quick reactions. But they are really different disciplines.

Wouldn't it be nice if an F1 driver could vaporize the enemy cars that get in his way? One might get a penalty for that.

playing off of this, so long as we are reviewing brain reaction time. MIT conducted a study in the late 90s on brain waives and what causes the most brain waives. I remember the study stated brain waives were most prevalent when driving a car in an unfamiliar city environment, and #2 was sight-reading music (reading/playing a piece for the first time).

He was beat by Heikki Kovalainen. Doesn't really translate into F1 prowess.

I thought HK was a potential WDC. Guess not.

 

In MS defense, this years car is designed exactly the opposite of what he likes. Understeer is designed in with the smaller front tires. He is not trying to tweak a neutral car, but one that is inherently opposite of what he likes. I am willing to bet if the car was designed with oversteer, he would be much quicker, as it suits his driving style.

My money is a podium, if not a win by the end of this year.

I don't care if he wins or not. it's great that he's back. he's beating 1/2 the field so far. he hasn't made any silly mistakes that we know of. he's very close to his younger and more current team mate. Team mates often have bigger gaps than these two, and Nico is no push over anyway...I wish I could be within a couple of tenths.

I still don't get the driver bashing on here.

 

I just finished watching the link that was on a thread called" Alonso on Board". Whats interesting is Nico also sucked in that race. He finished 5th because Hamilton and Webber took each other out. Actually he got passed by both Webber and Hamilton prior to that. He then pitted and didn't do crap after that. We are sitting here criticizing Michael of finishing 10th, when Rosberg should be the one we are bagging on. If Hamilton and Webber didn't take each other out, he would of finished 7 th, just three spots ahead of Michael. Micheal at least came from the back.

 

Well then why is Nico Rosberg doing so well? Does he like understeer?

Where does it show Rosberg is doing well? He finished fifth last race because Hamilton and Webber took each other out. In Bahrain, he could not pass Vettel who had a spark plug problem. So I dont understand where he is doing so well. For Michael to be out of the car for so long, Rosberg should be at least 6/10 to a second quicker than Michael. That seems not to be the case.
