Allegedly Brawn has set an ultimatum: If the current car is not winning a GP by June, he will stop any further development on the car and focus on next year's car. He used this strategy in 2008 at Honda.

    http://www.speedweek.ch/news/11103/Mercedes-GP-Sieges-Deadline-bis-Juni.html

According to the article Brawn admits that the current car's aerodynamics do not align with its weight distribution.

makes sense to me. btw, i don't think our bet will hold up for me...Massa is leading FA right now, but prob not going to be this way much longer...however, stranger things have happened and i just might win a movie!!! :)

Only "thanks" to a blown engine. Soon the natural order of things will be firmly in place again.

Massa will continue to do well. The basic guts of the team support him, not so much Alonso.

for those of you who refuse to listen, MS said exactly that (he needs to beat his team mate before he can complain about the car) in an interview in Australia. He's not hiding behind anything.

Mercedes 2010 is nothing like Brawn 2009. Norbert Haug and Ross Brawn must be aware of that by now.

The car is certainly not groung breaking and just keeps up in the field with the Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull in the leading quartet.

Shumacher or no Schumacher, Mercedes doesn't look like it's going to realise anything other than a mid-field position in the ranking by the end of ther year.

The Schumacher 'effect' cannot hide the fact that last year's title was won by Button and Brawn thanks to a cleverly exploited technical loophole, and nothing else.

Ross Brawn, Mercedes and Schumacher are unlikely to repeat 2009 this year.

Button was maybe right to swap team in the end!!

It may take a few more years for Mercedes to win a WCC.

Thanks for bringing the discussion back on track. Although it should be more about the car/team than the drivers.

As much as I like Michael, I dont think we will see him do anything great this season. Why? Because the car was not built around him. He was brought in this season to develop the car so next years car can be built around him. Thats if he chooses to stick around next year. It all depends on if he is enjoying F1 or not.

So what if Brawn really gives up on the 2010 car: Wouldn't that be possibly good news for all Schumacher fans?

    a) Brawn could do another 2009 strike of genius by developing the car with plenty of time and "on track testing" (in parts) during this season.

    b) The new car could be developed around/for Schumacher. Put in all the oversteer he wants.

Combine the two and he just might be fighting for the title next year?

I think thats what Brawn is saying indirectly. He wants Michael to do well and he is going to do whatever it takes to make sure it happens. So If things don't shape up for Michael in the next few races, he may actually do what he is saying.

    I agree with that.

I have my doubts that giving up on the current car soon and focus on 2011 would have the same magical effect: 2009 had drastic rule changes and Brawn found a loop hole. Can lightning strike twice?

Besides: I said it before and say it again: I think Mercedes is just another Honda/Toyota/BMW corporate exercise and not the nimble team Brawn GP was.

    +1.

Alonso drove brilliantly to be pushing Massa when he had gear selection issues. It's a real shame he tried to pass JB ... should have settled for points with a failing car, but then I like also the fact that he is a racer :).

I think that his apparent pessimism is probably an attempt to fly below the radar until the May 9th (reportedly) updates take effect. I'm thinking the D-B guys won't accept a decision to quit in the middle of their year of return to F1. They would look especially bad after the split with McLaren. "Merc left Woking and left their performance behind" kinda thing...

If I understand your position is that Braun is blowing smoke. Why is he doing this?

Possibly because he is trying to light a fire under his team by publically chastising them?? How does that work??

Flying below the radar: Sort of sneaking up on his unwary opponents.

I wonder if we'll see this approach more often over the next years. If your car is crap, don't even try to improve it (which is difficult under the current rules anyway) but focus on next season early on. Surely doesn't add to the excitement.

well if the aerodynamics isn't in balance with the weight distribution it could be a disadvantage to Schumacher indeed.

Schumacher steers his car with the throttle (so not an oversteering car, but balanced). I'm not sure what Rosberg likes but he's more comfortable with it at least.

I still think Schumacher isn't doing bad all things considered.

    +1 on all points.

I've harped on this before - It is absolutely beyond my comprehension why they don't open the track for free testing on the Thursday before the race - You don't have to run, but can if you want. An additional "caveat" may even be to disallow the teams that finished on the podium in the previous round from running (?)

Despite the hatred and vitriol aimed at the newbies, I'd like to see 'em "succeed" but how the hell can they improve if they're not allowed to test?

    Let 'em run on Thursday!

    Cheers,
    Ian
