So, that's what 'cool' means; being like Mansell. LOL

'Cool' must mean the opposite of charismatic then ...

I am glad there aren't many of them about; he was one of the least liked drivers here in UK. The man was an utter bore.

+1 on all points. I just don't get how cool really comes into the equations. The guy gets results. I hope he stays at Ferrari for years to come. I'd rather have the guy who is totally committed to the team and puts out 100% every time he hits the track than the guy who might be a touch faster but only cares about himself. Maybe I've played team sports too long, but caring about the team as a whole goes a long way with me.

    +1

    I was running Eddie Jordan in the British F3 championship in 1980 - We had a March 803 (POS btw) and Mansell had the *works* March ride. Pitted alongside him many times and lost count of the # of times the conversation would go;

After P1, "so, how's the car Nige?"
    "Not sure."
Then the timesheet would appear, and if he wasn't fast enough it'd invariably be "the engine's down on power". They'd change the motor.

After P2, "how's the new motor?"
    "Not sure"
If he hadn't improved, then the new engine was worse than the old one and they'd switch it back for the race! [Seriously, this happened more than once.]

A driver should *know* if he's down on power - The guy was, is, and will always remain one of the most undeserving WDC's in history IMHO. And a complete wanker to boot!

My 02c on the prick..... He was *never* liked by any of the teams he drove for. Although, I'll concede he did blow their doors off in the IRL after Sir Frank ostracized him from the world of F1 - Nobody wanted him, even though he was the WDC......

    Cheers,
    Ian

    + a million

Besides: A lot of people on here have driven single seaters including F1.

Most racing schools like Skip Barber, Jim Russell etc cost about 3k for a 3 day class. They offer racing series thereafter.

F1 can be driven for about 3k as well. I've done it twice already, it's not that big of a deal.
    http://www.formula-one.com/

For the price of a Ferrari street car you can get a real F1 car. Operating costs to run it for a race weekend are about 10k. It's not the cheapest hobby but quite a few folks do it.

There is the historic series for older cars:
    http://www.historicgrandprix.com/home.htm

And then there is the BOSS series for more modern F1 cars. And of course there is the insanely expensive Clienti Corse program.

Whether I criticize a driver or not has nothing to do with this. These driving experiences have shown me how hard it must be to do this competitively in a race and I have respect for the drivers. But that doesn't stop me from comparing one against the other. Which is pretty normal behavior: Whether it is in sports or in the arts world (singer, painters, actors) or in business, we all compare the more famous folks and rate them to some degree.

tru dat! what we are doing when we rip certain drivers, is comparing them to their peers, and NOT referencing our own 'ability'. so i find it a bit annoying when someone suggests we should keep our traps shut because 'we couldn't hold a candle' to any F1 dude. btw, i really really would love to have that Jordan (2001 or 2002)that was recently for sale, yellow it was..with a 'new' detuned cossie V-10 in it...i think it's allowed to race in the new
FV-10 Euroboss series??? that would be a dream to own a real racer, and not have someone tell me when and where i can use it..cough, cliente, cough,

I can't imagine anybody on here would compare themselves to the real F1 guys and their skills. Then ribbing is justified, but we're all comparing the "dudes with the dudes".

I've been trying for years to get some of my rich friends into buying a F1 car, yet they buy all these "useless" toys such as airplanes, CanAm cars and old Ferraris... ;)

Seriously, I wouldn't go for any of the newer F1 cars. Too much electronics to maintain, finicky engines, proprietary software, brittle carbon fibre. I'd go with a "no name" F1 from the seventies with a run-of-the-mill Cossie engine. Still expensive, yet not made of unobtanium. That or a late eighties (post turbo era)/early nineties car. They're not yet so sophisticated and relatively underappreciated. I've seen a Toleman for 80k US a few years ago.

The fancy club is Historic GP, but BOSS series ain't bad either. Yes it has others in there (Atlantic I believe and Indy lights), so it is not as pristine, but who cares.

In the long run operating costs are key, so pick something that has relatively common parts/engine.

Apologies for the hijack. Back to Massa.

Translated - nothing poser about him.
You know what they say - Weaklings love bullies.

    Not a cheerleader like ...

Coming from an inconspicuously attired, "balding portly pop tart" that drives like a somnolent snail?

Someone who chases appearances exclusively, falls head over heels for the fluffiest of images and latest 'idol' like a teenage cheerleader,
memorizes a bunch of numbers and stats and confuses it for knowledge and understanding like a teenage cheerleader,
and constantly ricochets off Massa and anyone who is not a poser like a ...

You've surpassed the wing on ur 308 in coolness.
And your childish gloating every time Massa has bad luck or is injured.

    If you weren't a mod I wouldn't bother but you're setting
the insipid tone for the other portly uncool marionettes that constantly moan about Massa
and other non-posers, which has led to an amalgam of obtuse and superficial refuse
inclusive surreptitious bannings + back door hyena pacts between less than cool characters.

    >That might have been true to Fangio's time, but today's drivers get a lot of their paycheck from sponsors and for
    >sponsors the perceived image is everything. If a driver is not cool, it is hard to
    >sell him to the fans even if he has a good track record.

That's some ultra CS (as BS but cooler) - or let me guess, it's the infamous theory of professor Von Braun
who circa 1936 predicted that since progress is inevitable it follows that prostitution must become ubiquitous.

Hurry, before Kimi vomits on ur 'cool' pseudo-democratic ice cream.

    >I don't run a chat forum.

Of course not. You cheerlead it into the 'cool' ground under.

You and 2-3 other mods and the harem of sycophants are constanly stirring the Massa pot,
which is not an issue per se, but subsequently you ban pro-Massa people surreptitiously.
    The quintessence of 'coolneSS.

Hopefully, one day you will comprehend how utterly fundamentalist
    and plain ridiculous you are.

    RP:

You should see Tifosi12 driving, jumping up and down like a ... repetition teaches people - portly cheerleader.
Fortunately many others aren't so simply superficial, bordering on utterly 'COOL'

In the interim, Massa is much cooler than T(0+)12 in any of his metamorphosal stages
both in perceived appearances and sensible reality, and most importantly he still races
-- despite T12's depraved cheerleading to the contrary.
