The local autocross season starts in my home town today. Does anyone autocross their 3x8 or mondial? Are you competitave, have fun, tear up your car, suggestions, thoughts, worries?
I did quite often when I had an engine in my car and have a few wins to show for it. You'll have a blast....and will get killed by anywho who's runnig proper autocross tires.
Best and safest way to learn how to handle your car. Plus it's a blast. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Me, I am going to Auto-cross my Mondi.. CalPoly San Luis Obispo, CA (I did a 240Z,, is was very slow.) After, bearings and brakes. (25 mm 328 Master and Gyrodiscs.) No need smoking your "street" set up. (On a Ferrari, Like $ 1,600.00,,,,,,,?) Edwardo CalPoly Alumni
I did one time. It was fun but it seemed pretty hard on the car. I was talked into it by a buddy who wanted to compare his 911's times to the 328. I'll stick to racing karts. While kart racing is expensive, it has to be more affordable than F-car repairs.
I have AX'ed the 328 a few times, but been at least 8 years. At the time I was AX'ing a 325is with ABS, so I struggled with the 328 locking up the brakes. The car is slow as heck for AX, but fun. Image Unavailable, Please Login
God I was hoping someone would ask. Actually I was. The guy with the 911 also owns a 308 QV and said the 911 had a slight edge over the f-car. We swapped cars and we were both faster in the 328. In all fairness, I must admit that niether one of us have experience racing cars and he doesn't race karts so the competition wasn't a fair assessment as to the better of the two cars.
If no one else is going to link this video I will. . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76vtL1yFht8 Dave
Or this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8RJLPlWEsI 308 isn't the fastest autocross car for sure, especially with stock suspension. This will sound bad too...once I did a few track days with a bunch of other really fast cars, I had no interest in autocross. Going down the front straight at 130+ and squeezing in a pass or two is hard to beat.
I did about a half a season of autox with PCA, in an 914, many years ago. It was ok. IMO it's more abusive on the car than big track events. You can kill a set of street tires in a day, not so much by wearing them out, but by tearing them up. I would never take my own 80s Ferrari and pound it on an AutoX course. Risk (damage to our old antiques, wear and tear to all components) v. reward (driving around in an understeering pig flat out in second gear in a parking lot) does not come out in favor of AutoX in an old Ferrari. IMO if you want a race experience, drive your Ferrari over to a kart track and do some karting. There's a saying I heard, autox is to racing what masturbation is to sex!
So, if I follow your logic (autox:racing::masturbation:sex) - that means you can't even jerk yourself off since you threw in the towel (dry) half way through your autocross. What a pu55y. Here's me in my F355 a couple weeks ago at an Autocross. Yeah, 1st place to boot...ok, it was novice class but you got to start somewhere. At least I had a "Happy Ending". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlwBOS5Vwcs
Nice video. That's the same place where I did a lot of my autox (except it was called Jack Murphy Stadium at the time). That is one of the best places to have an autox, because of the size of the lot, it can be more wide open than most autox. That course layout you had was nice and open and pretty quick. I don't have anything against autoX. I just got bored with it, but that's just me. The OP asked for opinions, that was mine. You have a much newer, nicer, more modern car than those of us in this antique model subforum, it's probably more suited than our old cars. But, anyways, everyone has to make their own decision if the risk/cost is worth the reward in autox'ing an old Ferrari. There is no set answer applicable to everyone.
Wow, he is really doing what he can to get that thing around the cones. Impressive. Like others, AutoX seems to confided/unnatural. Road course tracking feels more 'real' to me. Of course there are small n' twisty road courses and long winding ones.
Very cool video & great camera set up! I agree w/ db6, that the course was nice and open w/ not too many tight turns to slow you to low RPMs or confuse the cones on. The autoXing I used to do in my RX-7 was a blast but hard on the car. Wouldn't want to collect too many cones w/ the 328 either & scratch her up.
Nice pic but where is the smoke? I mostly either spun or hit a cone on every run. I was drifting way before it became popular (but never used the pk break). My street ported Racing Beat RX-7 was way tail happy & light enought to fling around. Learned to dive deep, break hard, hit the gas and then hurl myself into the next turn. I really believed I was dancing.
