Audi I thought no two 250GTO's were alike as they were all built bespoke for different racing teams & upgraded adhoc over their racing careers?

Wow, clearly the level of customisation offered back when the 250GTO was built is far higher than what we have access to now! Now we're only able to change a few colours and add a few bits of carbon fibre. I know Ferrari offers the Atelier program, but I recall reading somewhere that Luca admitted that it would not be able to build something like Jim's P4/5.

Yep, I think that is very possible as Harold pointed out, all hand craft to individual specs. Brings personalisation to a diff level, yes?

You mean all of them were built for use as race cars as opposed to road going sports cars which could be entered into races?

As far as I'm aware all 39 have racing pedigree, including racing against GT40's at Le Mans

Yes mate, it was the time when it was Ferrari vs the Cobra's (the Ferrari Cobra wars) as well as Ford.... an epic battle between the underdog and the Italians. All were used for competition, and later converted for street use. Customisation was largely done post factory as well with many being rebodied during their lifetime, following crashes.

As noted before, one of the most well documented in recent times is Nick Mason's car.... he has often said that it was one of the best investments he ever made.... heck he has owned it for over 25 years, and he always brings it to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Well, I would blame the system in place. The Ministry of Arts is trying to cultivate culture for the last decade but you have scholars & economists sitting up there plus citizens tuned to make $ first.

Well, they did spend half a billion building a theatre. They restored Chinatown, Malay village etc in modern interpretation which is like adding EFI & modern alloys to a classic. Musicians & athletes are imported while the locals find better prospects overseas. I wanted to be a painter when young but need to eat u know :D

Won't blame our actors for that, they're paid peanuts :D & rather not live under limelight unlike HK. In fact, one local actor dabbles in used cars!

We had an Aston DB3S racing here before & that car is somewhere in EU now under restoration.

If only the Land transport ministry is willing to give concessions to classics, we'll never see important cars reg. here.

And it's this pedigree that gives them legendary status and price tags too. Looks wise, I prefer the 250LMs and of course the pontoon 250TR.

Yes, every single 250GTO was consigned to the race track, unlike the SWB's for example which were a mixture of road and race (the most famous SWB, to me at least which was raced by Sir Stirling Moss and wore the Dark blue and white livery- extremely unusual for a Ferrari!). A great magazine to get hold of is back issues of Cavallino if you are interested to learn more about the classics.... they can be bought from Pit Stop Bookshop in West Australia by mail order, or ebay. Well worth the read if you want to know more of the history of the prancing horse.

Tim, how do you like the Murcie so far? Does hype live up to reality?

Ahhh yes, the 250TR..... the real Red Head..... nice.... you clearly like your classics!

Never really liked the 250LM as much.... seemed a bit too short and stubby to me compared to the GTO.... I guess I was always blinded by the GTO... that long silhouette just absolutely has to be one of the greatest designs ever to me.... sigh.... if only there were one here. Actually saw one in Japan some time back.... I dropped dead in disbelief....

Yes, and they should also allow the classic LHDs in. Many, many good cars came only in LHD. 288GTO sure comes to mind.

You should head off to GoodWood revival. I saw something like 5 GTOs going out onto the race track, with LMs and SWBs. Awesome! Don't know which was Mason's but I'm sure he was somewhere there, thick in the fray. Moss was also there in his SLR.

Well, there are more 250GTO replicas than the real deal including some built on Ferrari chassis & engines too.

Hi guys .. i heard that u were a friendly bunch and as im thinking of taking the leap & buying my first ferrari i thought i'd come and say hello. Also to ask some questions before writing the cheque. I'm looking at a yellow 360 spider (u may know where it is) and i think i've talked it down to a pretty good price but u can never be too sure. It has 10k km on the clock and it is quite immaculate in that it looks like it's come straight out of the showroom. I want to get a PPI done by Ital but because it has a tubi exhaust they will not sell me the warranty extension. Do u think it's a big deal to buy it without the warranty, and how difficult will it be to get it fixed if god forbid something goes wrong. Also is there anything else i need to know before i make my first jump into supercar ownership. Thanks in advance.

Damn!!! Mate, that green one was always an oddity to me. Incredible to see a Ferrari in almost BRG. believe it also used to have the headlight covers painted green and that was a bit too much. But what a lovely unusual car.

Nick Mason bought his car in 1978 for USD86k.... after the crazy peak of well above USD14mio diring the early ninetys, Patrick Ma picked his up for "only" USD4.1mio in 1997 and I believe still holds it in Hong Kong.... now its about USD18mio.... if you can find one.... me wishes that I had one.... but not in white!!!!

How much money are you willing to spend in case something goes wrong? Worst case just buy an original exhaust and bring it back to Ital?
