Took out the mainshaft. It comes out from the passanger side which is different then the layshaft. I used my plate and the ring-nut to help pull the shaft out from the passenger side while holding the pinion-mesh gear with some aluminum plate... and hammered it out from the driver side. here is how i organized all the parts to keep them in order... i still have to remove the pinion shaft but have to make up a special tool to hold the pinoin gear so i can remove the ringnut. then i will check everything carefully before i order any parts i need to re-assemble with the new lower ratio drop gears i have... good call redzone are all bearings, seals, lock nuts usually changed? -daniel Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
D'OH!!! Sorry about that bro, that was my fault. I ran into the same problem while at Steve's (a.k.a. TheOnlyest) house taking apart his gearbox with Plugzit yesterday. We ended up just taking out the main shaft, which we would have needed to anyway because he is gonna have to replace his output shaft and both drop gears. I really like your setup for removing the shafts. Us, being Stooges, use more caveman tactics and beat it out.
Daniel, you are doing such an excellent job that you are making me want to fast-foward to the major service you are going to do for me!!
Yo Daniel, When you go to put the main shaft back in be sure to use Ferrari Especiale tool #64 to hold the bearings in place. Here are in instructions for using it. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=139499227&postcount=20
Well, the shafts look good but found a gear that has pitting. It goes on the Layshaft. Is this second gear? Will need to find one. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Has anyone ever had gears repaired with pitting like this? Of course, it's an unforgiving application, but just wondering? Weld/Metal spray and machine?
LOL... its gets worse... actually its not second gear that is bad, its 1st gear and the mating gear on the mainshaft has pitting. So im looking for a 1st gear w/mainshaft... I was expecting 2nd gear to be the bad one. Does anyone have experience why 1st would go? Also just before i put the car away last year i felt some backlash while driving in 1st gear at slow speeds only.
i made a special tool to hold the pinion gear so i can undo the ringnut and take the shaft out. I ended up using an impact gun to remove the nut. It has normal threads so you turn it counter-clockwise to undo. Awesome Daniel, not sure why you're taking the pinion shaft out if there's nothing wrong with it, but the tool you made rocks! PM Plugzit (Bruce) about the gears and stuff you need, he has lots of GB parts.
i have to take everything apart to get at the drop gears i'm changing for the lower gear ratio. ( final drive ratio... factory was 3.53:1 and now will be 4.34:1 ) This is the last step. Then i get to put everything back together. Yes, thanks. i will pm Plugzit.
ok, once the ringnut was off the bearing and shim came off and the pinoin shaft with it's bearing came off the other end. To get the sleeve/drop-gear/spacer assembly out i had to tap it out from the rear. voila... pinion out. Well... after all this i can now switch the drop-gears to get my 4.3:1 ratio. There are my new 25/29 gears... part # 70000800 out of the box. I have to swap out the gear on the clutch-shaft (pic1) and the one on the pinion-shaft (pic2) THEN RE-ASSEMBLE! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Daniel, While you have it apart, would you please do the Brotherhood a favor and list the manufacture bearing numbers, and where they go? It will help the next guy save money BIG TIME if the "unobtainium" game is being played. Thanks bro, and AWESOME work!!!!
