I`m looking for a red 348 TB with black interior. The car must be in the kind of condition that shows that it`s previous owner has treated it with love and care. I have used a few months to prepare for owning such a car. My garage is rebuilt, insulated and heated so now I`m ready if I come across a good car at a reasonable price. If any of you are planning to sell or know someone who`s selling the kind of car described above, please let me know. I live in Norway so this is where the car will have it`s new home. Regards Johnny
Hey guys, I am in the market for my first Ferrari. and I have found a blue/tan 6 speed Spider fairly close to me, that is original owner, always up to date service/taken care of by Ferrari Toronto (I hope that would mean valve guides changed?). He says the car has been no trouble to him at all, and was invited to speak to the mechanics that service it at the dealership. Includes full service history as well. He said the check engine light is on due to new cats needed, and he would replace them prior to me buying it, or give me the value of them off the price of the car so I could do as I choose. I think I could get this car for around $70k CDN or so minus cats pricing if it passes e-test. Do you think this would be a good first Ferrari? the price is right for sure. He just is moving on to other things it seems, and is ready to let her go. It's either this car comfortably bought without payments, or a rosso F360 Spider with 20k on body that just had its engine replaced with a 3000mile replacement (full documentation to support all this), and payments for several years. (about $60k more). I personally love the styling on the F355 and think it's my ideal look, but is the performance different between the two cars worth the tons of extra cash? And which one is likely to give me less trouble in the long run/be easier to sell when it comes time/keep its value more. Thanks in advance. -M
well, you have started something here. In this section it may be hard to receive an unbiased opinion. finance or not, your choice. Many will say pay cash but yet they finance their daily drivers. How you pay is second to having the funds to maintain it. style; matter of opinion. 355 owners seem to believe they have the eptiome of V8 Ferrari -P) in spyder form, I think 360 looks better, not 60k better. most who have gone from a 355 to a 360 does not regret so that should speak volumes. maintenance; both are reliable if you drive them . 360 is lower in cost to maintain plus parts more readily available. 360 resell will be stronger for a while due to lower maintenance costs. if headers/valves are done right then that's no longer an issue.
Great info, thanks! yeah I'm not sure that it's 60k better, but red and spider 360s hold their value really well, esp 6 spd ones I hear. we'll see what price the 355 ends up being. Is the difference in performance noticeable do you think?
Another thing that I found funny was the insurance on the 355 is less than my 2006 audi S4 cabrio. go figure. but the 360 is "please call for a special quote" so probably going to be pricey.
the difference between a 360 and a 355 at high speeds is night and day in the Spiders. Anyone that tells you differently is biased to the 355. I've not talked to one owner of a 355 spider that is comfortable above 130mph with the top down in their cars. My old 360 Spider was comfortable at 165 plus no problem and would cruise in the 130's with an ease unmatched by the 355. I think the 355's have a great exhaust note and are a fantastic car but you are comparing apples to oranges imho. 355's are beautiful cars I won't disagree and lots like them more than the 360's in looks. I don't think your quote about 360's holding better value is really true. I think over time the 360 will lose more value because of the numbers. I believe they will lose about 5% more than a 355 year over year. 355's and 360's aren't close on maintenance. There are 100 threads alone on guys not wanting to spend the 10k-20k for the majors on their 355's when a 360 should cost you about 2k a year to maintain or 4-6k for a 3 year major. Totally different maintenance for everything. This is the exact reason 355's have a 30k price swing in asking. I would be shocked if your insurance was a lot different between the two cars and I bet your insurance company just hasn't locked solid numbers on a 360 yet because they are newer. I'm also shocked that the 360 is 60k more in this instance. I think that 360 is over priced but I don't really know your canadian market well. Buy the car that appeals the most to you. Just don't be surprised by either when it comes to paying up keep. Do a lot of digging on the cars and make sure you don't get surprised with anything down the road whether it's maintenance or structural. Ferrari's are fantastic and fun and it would be awful to end up with the wrong one the first time you buy. For all you 355 guys I'm not slinging mud here. I promise. I love your cars and wish I had one. Just can't find the correct one for me. They sound intoxicating and I think they are going to be a great car to have in 20 years.
No, just lies. Major costs around $7K for a 355- $5K in some places, $8K in other places. it is approx $1500-$2K more than a 360. Running costs and general maintenance are not higher than a 360- at least when comparing 355 maintenance and service bills to 360 service bills. (I did my homework thoroughly before upgrading from a 328 to a 355) 355s are appealing because in many cases they have already "Bottomed out" pricewise- so a $55K 355 might be worth $45-$50K in three years, while a $75K 360 might be worth $50-$55K. there's still a bit more depreciation associated with buying a good 360 right now in addition to the higher purchase price. Those willing to accept a bit of risk can still find nice looking 355s in the mid40's as well, where a similarly higher mileage, deferred maintenance 360 will be in the mid 60s. 360 is a newer, BETTER car than the 355- this fact is indisputable. Many of us prefer the look of the 355 and the 328 to the more rounded modern Ferrari look that was started with the 360. I think that has some resonance with 355 owners- true the pop up headlights are a very "80s" feature, but the car looks very contemporary and at least to many of us, defined the classic Ferrari V8 look. A late 98 or 99 355 is a VERY sorted car. In speaking with the three prominent Ferrari Indies in the Boston area I was specifically told that by 99 they were not seeing valve problems, not experiencing the kinds of header failures earlier cars were, and that a few well known electrical gremlins were also sorted. I was concerned about F1 failures and was assured that their experience was the f1 system was proving to be reliable and not a chronic issue. Of course I do find the interior of the 360 far more appealing- the F1 system is dramatically better, and legroom and pedal spacing infinitely more agreeable for us taller guys. I can't imagine anyone would be disappointed with either car in their garage! (After a 308 and a 328 I could not be happier with my 355)
So we agree on all but the maintenance. Aren't most of the 40k 355's out there in need of at least 15k in repairs? It's a surprise someone buying doesn't need if they can only afford the 40-50k price tag. Most of the 98 and 99's are priced well above this number 70's to 80's and are very very very close to the 360's. I've said I think the 360's have more space to fall but in all reality most buyers will end up with a 360 over a 355 if priced close because it's newer. The 355 owners I know must have been screwed on their services is all I can say.
I can't say that I've seen a $40K 355 that was not a salvage car- $45K 355's usually have higher mileage and beat interiors- one sold here in Boston for $45K for a forumite and it had a fresh major and the heads done. I think apples to apples a 360 is about $20-$25K more right now- when you factor in depreciation but slightly reduced service costs the 3-5 year ownership costs should not be horribly different- I've NEVER heard of a major Service for a 355 costing more than $8K- and I have heard many, many stories about them costing in the $5-$6k range. Here I pay around $7K- same mechanic does a 360 for $6200...so there you go. For me personally I certainly looked at many 360s and a couple of 430s as well. I had enough cash tucked away to buy either. I liked the feel and sound of the 355, there's a certain rawness about the car that appeals to me- might not appeal to everyone but it did to me. I swung a very good deal on my car leaving a pretty fat war chest to finance any unexpected mechanical issue... if they occur. So far so good though.
I too would be scared of a 355 in the 40's. I think a good one well sorted and maintained should be in the upper 50's low 60's for a spider. I'm not sold on the few 80's plus listed unless you find a Fiorano. I think the figures I'm told on services include new manifolds and all the valve issues others have. So I would guess 7k for a major as you say is correct. The 360 services are funny. There is a dealer back east advertising 4500 services and our local is 7k I think a 5-6k every 3 years is about correct there. I also think the 360's are only worth about another 25k so in this OP's question I still think that 360 he's offered is too much.
the 355s in the price range of upper 50s plus do one thing. SIT! Because no one is buying them. A 355 in the 40s is someone who wants to move his car.
Depends on the car. That statement can't cover cars that have had literally no maintenance whatsoever to cars that are 100% up to date and sorted.
either way... They are not selling. No one wants to except what the market says. More than 55k and these cars are not moving. proof is there ...the same cars are for sell week after week
