I just pulled out a box of coins and medals my grandfather gave to me when I was a child. I forgot I had them! He collected most of them while serving in Europe during WWI, and I recall many of them date back as far as the 1700s, one from the 1600s. There are also a few round medals (not the pin-on type) but I have no idea what they are for. Can anyone suggest a good reputable site where I can learn a little more? I'm going to have to renew my Silver so I can post some photos. The medals are pretty cool.

Coins are cool, I collect Spanish Coins and other rare coins along with Comic Books and other collectables... if you have some rare coins dating to the ancient times here is a website of coins and how to spot fake/replica coins.

Good luck and you might want to post some pics for us to marvel at your newly acquired collection.

Here are some photos. My memory wasn't spot-on with the dates, though I was in the ballpark. There are roughly 100 coins--mostly European--half from the mid-to-late 1800's and the others from the early 1900's.

    1) The oldest, from 1789. That one is pretty worn, but it's interesting to see how sloppily it was stamped.
    2) The GI "dog" Tags are a real throwback, right down to using an upside-down 7 as an L.
3-9) The medals. No idea what they're for. The first has Woodrow Wilson on one side. The two larger ones are pretty solid, 2" across and 1/8" thick. The other two are about the size of a quarter.
    10) A mexican coin from 1836
    11 & 12) 4 good-sized coins from mid-to-late 1800's: 1820 George III (no denomination), 1873 Italian 4 lire, 1875 5 Francs, 1887 Queen Victoria (no denomination).

Very cool! I have a collection of silver dollars as well as lots of coins from WWII my dad brought back from Europe. I'll take a few shot this weekend. My uncle gave me a gold coin I have had forever. Now where did I put it...

Coin collecting is one of my favorite hobbies. I have a lot of stuff, including a ton of wheat pennies, buffalo nickels,Mercury dimes, half dollars, one Silver Eagle,a few proof and mint sets,2 coins from ancient Greece (between 138 and 244 AD),and 3 Morgan dollars. I have a ton of other stuff too.
I also collect paper money. Anyone here also collect paper money?

Not really, I have several books of Russian/USSR paper money I picked up in Moscow 1992 when a few USD could buy you the world there. I think for $100 USD I bought all that paper money, coin collections for a friend, gold plated chess set, several stackable dolls, and a vintage Bible for my dad.

Thats cool, lately Ive been trying to get stuff from Russia and the rest of Europe.
Ive only got a few Euro coins and 20 złoty and 100 złoty bills from Poland.
The rest of my paper money is from the US and Japan. I have one "horseblanket" Silver Cert. $1 from 1923,and a Confederate $5 bill. The rest is just other old stuff and WW2-era Japanese yen.
