I was very fortunate to have found a fantastic early Testarossa from a fellow Fchat member. The TR is superb, but the paint had several issues/flaws so it was difinitely time for a respray. I decided to go all out and have it done right by the best in the business and go for my all time favorite color on a TR, Miami Vice white!! I think with the tan interior, the final result should be drop dead gorgeous.
Note to the purists: the car already had paint work done, so it wasn't the original paint. The color just didn't grab me like white did, and the way I look at it, Miami Vice painted 2 black cars, why couldn't I?

AWESOME!! The TR is one of my fav designs of all time. I really want one, regardless of how it handles compared to today's cars. Congrats on your find!

Yikes, I know that white/bianco is the only proper color for a Testarossa (regardless of the original color of the MV ones), but that's such a beautiful color there. Was that the original color before the first repaint? Does that count as nero metallizzato?

Since you're doing a makeover you've got to change out the interior to cream to really match. Don't know why, but it seems that most of the factory white cars came with tan interior, like mine. Since the MV ones were black from the factory they were cream, and it's a really nice match. My tan interior always looks too orange to me against the white.

Of course you've got the single mirror too, so you're way cooler than me.

Stephane, I see what looks like hyperflow, or other....precats and bypass pipes in there? With the stock muffler, how loud is the car - subjectively speaking?

Yes, that is correct, HyperFlows I believe, but no, the sound is still quite tame, the TR was never a loud car to begin with. I still plan on removing that huge muffler and replace it with a nice chrome unit, hopefully I will get a little more sound out of it.

The interior is in such good shape that I plan on leaving it alone, I know that cream would be nice, but I actually like the tan against a white body, looks more "factory".

The original color was grigio and to be honest, looked a lot better in photos than in person, so making the color change wasn't a difficult decision. Once the car is finished, you will think the color was factory, and no one will be able to tell it was ever a gray car.

This was Jay's car indeed. I have always wanted a flying mirror TR, and would not trade it with anything else, even the 512M. To me, this is the real deal. I am absolutely in love with it.

When I was looking for mine I never really considered white. I figured it had to be red and nothing else. Now after seeing many red ones and some other colours I cant justify any other colour other than white. I believe it's the only colour that suits the TR and would never trade it for a red one. Don't get me wrong they are all beautiful but a Testarossa must be white/crema.

Why did some TRs have one mirror and others had 2?

    Dear Ferraristi,

Scale....you have some shopping issues. You change cars more than the women I know change shoes. What's this...your 3rd Testarossa? :D

It truly is the Miami Vice era on Fchat now. I remember...forever, you could NOT give away a white TR.....now everyone wants one. Just like one day.... "remember when TR's were $50K, now you can't even get one under $180K.

...oh don't think so? I have been around TR's a long time and know what a white TR was....now people like scale are painting them white !

    Way to go Scale !!

...can't wait to see more "progress" pix.

    Shamile

    Freeze....Miami Vice !

Speaking of white TRs....there is a tiny town (pop. about 2,000) just south us, where I've heard there is a white TR. For years I've heard about this car, but have never seen it. Rumor has it that the owner never drives it. I never knew what street the guy lives or anything, but when I would drive through there....I'd always be looking in every garage, etc. Well finally the other day my wife and I were passing through and WHAM...there it is! I finally saw this mythical car....parked just outside the garage door...like the owner had pulled it outside temporarily. I could only see the car from a distance of about 150 feet, but it looked "mint" per my bionic eyes. The story goes that it only has a couple thousand miles on it.

Shamile is right....white is becoming the new red for Testarossas.

First 2 years of production had the flying mirror (just under 1400 built), then by 1987 they changed it for some crazy reason, look up the archives, there's a dozen reasons why.

LOL!!! Yes, 3rd TR for me Shamille, but the 3rd time is the right one ;)

I agree that the white Testarossa is becoming the "red" craze. Thanks to Miami Vice.

    Thanks!

Cool story. It's a shame he doesn't get to enjoy it that much. At least he has the right piece of art in his garage!

awesome story and cool how you found him. You need to knock on his door or leave a note in his mail box .
Hopefully he will be a friendy car guy and may even want to sell in the near future.

Two good things about a project by Scales. 1; it will have nice wheels. 2; it will be for sell soon.

What is the process used to strip the paint?

As for the new paint, single stage was how it was originally done. I think double stage might be too "glassy" for the period look.

The only wheels for a Miami Vice Testarossa are the original ones.

I left that with the expert, he knows I want it done right. As for the wheels, original is best for that TR.

Looks like you are filling in the rear bumper holes and going for the Euro look. Yes? I will likely do that next fall when mine comes off the raod for the brief winter here in MD. Will be in the new house with the appropriate sized garage. Can not wait!

I look forward to following this thread.

Thanks Curtis!! Yes, I like the look better, besides, that black piece was so heavy (and useless) I had no regret removing it!
