The JE lady’s note seems a bid terse to me and doesn’t seem as though she read and comprehended. I wonder how many miles these pistons will have on them before they make it into my engine……..

    Me:
    “Hi,
You guys apparently finished and shipped the piston right on schedule and they are here in PA on the UPS truck which is good…….but you shipped them as signature required and I don’t have any way to receive a package shipped this way so UPS will be returning it to you.

When UPS bring the pistons back to you can you please ship them UPS or FexEx ground no signature required. If you require a signature then please use FedEx ground with evening or Saturday delivery specified so someone can be available to provide the signature.

I wish you had informed me of your intent to add the signature requirement ahead of time so I could have provided correct shipping instructions. I expect you will not be billing me for the incorrect shipment attempt.

    Thanks,
    Mark”

    JE:
    “Mark,
A signature is required on ALL JE shippments due to the high dollar amount being shipped to you. WE do not want UPS or FEDEX to drop off pistons on you door step.
I will have the parts reshipped to you but they will be sent out again with a signature required.
    Thank you
    Joy”

Me (not believing she understood the first email):
    “ Joy,
Shipping with a signature require is fine, but it MUST be shipped FedEx residential delivery with the evening delivery or weekend delivery option selected or I will not receive the package because I am not available during the day to sign anything for anyone.

    Thanks,
    Mark”

nope, and the nieghbors all work....at least the ones I know do.

I could have them hold it at the depot and take a couple hours off Monday to go get it, but I don’t need the pistons just yet and I have better things to do with a couple hours off work. Most companies who have a policy of shipping everything signature required tell you about it up front….because when they don’t tell you they end up shipping things twice. The place I got the valves was signature over $1000 (they said Ups required it) , it was printed in great big letters on the order form and they asked right up front if I wanted 1 box with a signature or multiple boxes without a signature…..so clearly I’m not the only one who checks the return to sender box when there is a note instead of a box waiting by the door.

    At least around here.
This thread has been one of the great discoveries of Fchat since I've come back into the world, I recall I tuned out just as you were declaring your intention to start this project!

Yes 11AM-7pm, Moday-Friday. I get out of work around 6 and could be at the deopt about 8:30....well after they've closed. Lana would have no problem getting up there...but at the depot only the person who's name is on the box can sign so she can't get it for me. It's just a great big pain in my *ss.

I just looked at the status and the folks at UPS changed my resason for return from "other" (everything else on the list is a problem with what is in the box) to "Receiver does not want the order and refused to accept delivery". I sent them a nice note.......

They'll be back in 2 weeks on the FedEx ground truck and they will deliver 5pm-8pm or saturday so no problem for Lana to be there to sign during the week or me on Sat. UPS does a lot of things very well but resientail signature required packages aren't one of them.

There is a way around this. Get the UPS tracking number, call the local UPS hub and ask them to hold it for you for pickup.

I think I could pay a fee to have them ship it to the hub closest to work where I could pick it up….but that’s all way more trouble than it’s worth for something I don’t NEED for a couple months. The easy solution is to send the box will box will go back and let the FedEx guy bring it to me when I’m home….and although it may not always show I’m a big fan of doing things the easy way.

I decided to tack the flange on thinking it would be easier to see exactly what I'm making and make the part easier to hold. It looks ugly now, I know, wait......there is a beautiful flange in inside that chunk of metal just waiting to get out. I'll get the other one to this point and then start the serious carving.

I got a little less shy about welding tonight.

Tomorrow I'll start making it look like something usefull. The top is sitting at the the port centerline angle of 25*.....but I'm thinking it shouldbe about 30*-35* to get the turn up started, I'll take care ot that first then see what I have and decide on a bolt pattern which will let me decide on a shape and what care be milled away.

    ;)
    die grinder.
    LOL
I believe the answer is, "It's all in the wrist."
(Yes,,,, If your wrist action is + 0.0001 or - 0.0001")

It's a 400A L-tec, there should be a pic posted about 2-3 years ago. I'ts big....I think it has a 100% duty cycle at 400A, but if you turn the knob down it welds .049 SS headers tubing just as easily

Holy crap! That's some serious amperage.

I started welding new stainless headers for my Corvette yesterday. What gas flow settings were you using on yours? I'm experimenting with settings on the torch and back purge. I've got a gas lens with a few different cups to try too.

    It's a big welder....for welding big things.

I run the gas at about 15 cfm and use a #6 cup for most everything. On the purge I just Tee'd the line and put a needlt valve for the purge....

Ha, that's what I did for the purge! A friend of mine bought another regulator and a bunch of fittings, spent $150. I spent $6 for some tubing and two fittings to screw into a flow control that I had in the drawer. I win. Plus it shuts off by itself instead of me forgetting to turn it off and losing all my gas.

Sorry about double checking your math Mark. My bad. I've been focusing on my math (valve guide angles) and didn't catch yours.

The adapter looks great. You will be welding in the port to tie the adapter to the head, right?

This is such an enjoyable build Mark. You are a Master.
