What's with all the commercials? Every other minute, "commercial break". I spent most of my night watching them. Did anybody else notice this? I think we are missing a good amount of coverage, specially on a race like today's Grand prix.

I regularly described Speed's coverage as "while we were away, a race happened".

This year, I use the DVR to let "live" get a bit ahead. I pause, back up to replay the start, passes, etc., and then -- skipping over the commercials -- wind up catching up with live around the interviews.

That's another reason I'm starting to like Indycar. They have that picture-in-picture race coverage during commercials.

But I don't know why it took me so long to get a DVR. Being able to skip commercials have converted a lot of channels back to being watchable, again.
(AMC, in particular, was intolerable, the way they fragment the last ten minutes of a film with twenty minutes of commercials.)

I agree, what was with all the damn commercials? Also there timing was horrible, they would take a commercial break right in the middle of Hamilton or whoever would pass someone. Absolutely ridiculous!

The modern way of watching stuff is to record it and then fast forward the comercials.

The disadvantage of 375 TV stations is the 375 TV stations ALL have to SELL enough comercials for ALL of them stay on the air. That costs a lot of money--that is it costs advertizers a lot of money. But since advertizers are free to change which programs they buy time on, the price for comercials has gone down while the need of revenue flowing under the noses of the TV stations has gone up. So, The free amrket system has made the problem of comercials worse. {Who would have thought}.

ANyway, get a DVR, record what you want to watch and Fast forward.

The original DVRs could auto skip comercials. Then the TV stations started paying the DVR manufactures not to do this. Therefore you can't press a single button a presto arrive at the opposite side of the comercial.

and also how come they only sparingly show the speed/rpm and details of that nature? i want to see that everytime they go to the onboard camera. i thought the coverage sucked.

Speed has no control of those graphics, they are provided with the world feed by FOM. So, once again, it's the fault of the evil dwarf.

That's the only way I can watch the races on Speed anymore. Otherwise I'm stuck watching the retarded prom queen over and over...

I understand they need to show commercials but SPEED is going way too far.

Did Will Buxton ever make his "debut" They had a commercial break every 3 minutes so if he did I never seen it!

And one more thing. If you ARE going to ruin the race with 50 commercial breaks make sure they are relevant. As in, something car related. If I see the down syndrome girl be crowned homecoming queen one more time I am going to go insane. Nothing against her at all, just the stupid ass commercial. I'm so sick of "values and life lessons". I want to watch a race!

that's the downside of having the race on late at night ... you get the late night commercials along with it.

They paid them? I thought they pressured them with lawsuits ... the DVR guys couldn't possibly survive a legal assault from the networks [financially]. Them being Tivo -- everyone else is just the cable/satellite companies and no way are they going to have auto commercial skip.

Yeah. What the hell are they selling? They're not even making any money off of that. I would expect to see motor oil commercials and the like, but that seems more appropriate for MTV.

Anyways, I'm gonna give Strong VPN a try to get the BBC feed.

Speed doesn't control how many commercials. I've watched it side by side with the world feed and the commercial breaks are identical. Try entering the 21st century and fast forward through the commercials. ;)

I'm pretty sure you're mistaken - There are no breaks in the world feed - That's what the BBC use for example, and they don't have any breaks.

But, I agree - DVR's at least make it "tolerable" - Having said that, Speed does seem to be getting worse - Time to try the VPN approach I think.

    Cheers,
    Ian

+1. Not sure what you were watching but it wasn't the world feed. I don't think the "raw" world feed is even available to the public?

Don't get me started on how TV butchers films.

The Indy style live in a box is a great compromise.
I just hope that someday we get BBC HiDef in my area and they start including F1.
As fars as I'm concerned SPEED's F1 programing is just another reason to hate FOX;)

I hate it, and just skip through like a normal commercial. I have a HUGE screen yet it's still too small to really watch the inset and you still have the audio from the commercial. If anything happens they will show it on replay anyway.

I do like the Versus Indy coverage better though (plus HD is nice). It's a huge advantage that they have directorial control over the cameras, unlike F1. The announcer team still has a little way to go to be "great" but they are getting there. Still they make some boo-boos from time to time. At least they have stopped with the "first one to pit last" nonsense.

Its not ideal but given the choice of seeing a commercial with the race in a box or just a commercial I'll take the former.

I misspoke. I meant I watch the BBC coverage side by side with Speed. Raw live feed would be cool.

Was anyone else picking up on what sounded like a very
heavy air of tension between commentators Varsha, Hobbs
    and Matchett?

This wasn't the good natured ribbing or Hobbs' general
comic relief, more like every time Varsha would try to
deviate from the narrative, collective "here he goes again"
exhasperated exhales could clearly be heard from Hobbs
    and Matchett.

    Varsha is clearly becoming expendable.

Yes, something like $10 per DVR box.
