    awesome pics. lightning is common with eruptions. has to do with soilds, ash and soot, moving in the air. gives off static electricity and lightning flashes.

    Really? I thought our best minds had determined that it was Vulcan making thunderbolts for Jupiter and weapons for Mars -- and who couldn't believe that based on the truly awesome display ;)

    It is very well established. I remember my physics book years ago back in college had a picture of lighting around a volcano as its cover. I read that caption so many times...
