Diablo tyre advice and help needed

I Just bought a set of Michelin PS2's. $400 for the rears, $200 for the fronts plus tax, etc...

I too have the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's. For the 17" rim, you can't get P zero's anymore. The PS2's are nice but the edge is rounded and makes the rear tire look narrower compared to the square shouldered Pirellis.

You could always try to find 18" VT Roadster rims (good luck at a reasonable cost) and go with P Zero Rossa's. Early Murci rims do look nice but don't have that "deep dish" look at the rear...which I really like.

NO MORE PIRELLIS 235/40ZR17 P ZERO ASIMMETRICO!
and
NON OTHER TYRE/BRAND IS VALID!

That sadly a fact.

- The Michelin Pilot Sport has a loadindex of 90Y
For the Diablo Front Wheel it must be 94Y
And for the rear tyre even 106Y!
(check it out, in case of an accident.....
- Speed Index of all other tyres is up to 300 km/h
For the Diablo it must have +300 km/h
- Rounded Edges are forbitten on the Diablo
- the bigger size of the Pirelli P Zero Asi.245/40ZR 17 does not work on the VT

In Europe, we know about this problem since last year.
Lamborghini has sued Pirelli and lost the fight.
Pirelli is pissed of and will never ever produce the 235/40ZR17 for the Diablo.

7 Diablo VT`s changed (on advice and release of Pirelli) from 235 to 245.
All VT`s are now broken and in the factory.
Reason - wrong circumference, front differencial destroyed.
Yes, this was the reason Lamborghini/Italy sued Pirelli.

Gents, I could tell/write you +100 pages on this Pirelli tyre problem.

Anyway, the sad fact is: No legal/valid tyre in on the market for the VT 17"

What about the 18" wheels on the later cars?
I think that the 235 front tire size is not made by Pirelli anymore.
And I think that the 245 size was suggested.

I think that stock sizes are: front 235/35/18 rear 335/30/18

What to do for the front? Will 245's destroy the front differential?

7 Diablos are already destroyes, all cars are in the factory, Lamborghini and Pirelli know very well about the problem.

B4 somebody asks what about to "remove" the VT system on the front and to drive it like a 2WD - forget it!
On a long way it will kill your main differential `cause the 2 "black boxes" will get a wrong signal (hope somebody can translate it in a fluet english). I personal don`t know any person who is possible to reprogram the black boxes. Even a change of the black boxes is impossibel - 6.0 doesn`t works on a 5.7 and earlier 2WD doesn`t works on a VT.

Sorry, like I already said, #I could type +100 pages.....no way, no legal tyres anymore for the Diablo VT.

But just curious, for those of us that are using the PS2s, besides the load index being wrong, why the rounded edge is forbidden?

In Europe you need a factory approval if you want to change your tyre brand and/or size.
Lamborghini/Italy says no clearance for rounded edges. Sorry hard to translate but its something with "basicity of surface"
Anyway, Lamborghini says strictly: NO
And in case of an accident, damage or whatever no warranty and its not legal.

 

Please explain how the ECU's would know if the front wheel drive was disconected.
Viscous coupling is not electronically controled.

Cause its very technical and I am not a Lamborghini engineer beside this I am typing and translating in a second language.

There are different ECU`s for the 2WD, VT, GT and so on - for a good reason.
There are different couplings(?): Viscoclutch, Lamellen (Discclutch) and different Sperren (pawls?)
And once again, this was the reason Lamborghini lost at the court cause they changed from disc to visco and different pawls.

Damn, I am sorry I can not translate in a fluent english all this technical stuff.

But I can tell you, we have discussed this problem with engineers, Lamborghini executive, Pirelli management and many highly respected specialists for tyres, gearboxes and so on.

To answer your question:
Sure, you can disconect the front wheel drive - it will work for a while, driving always straight and in curves slowly. Maybe in USA with 55 its not a big deal (if you don`t go on the track!) but in Europe with no speed limit it will kill the system.
You can even check your system before its gone and dead: First hint the flash in the dashboard is burning, second hint check the fluid in the differential box - if it smells like old eggs its on the way to get destroyed.

Believe me, I know what I`m talking about - 7 Diablo VT are already in the factory: 25K €uros for repair.

 

I do not want to hijack this thread, always speaking about Diabols and the 235/40-17 Y class tire - only for the 2WD SE30.

here in Italy there are two tire brands in the correct sizes available: one is Michelin with the Pilot Sport II tires (234/40-17 Y front and 335/30-18 Y rears) and the Pirelli Zero Nero in front and Zero Rosso for the rears.

The difference is the load difference on the fronts. Both the Michelin PS2 and the PZero Nero have a load of 90 while the original PZero Rosso was 94.

I did find a tire in production that meets the original specs, but it would not be a matching set. Toyo 235 40 R 17 94 Y PROXES

Speaking of matching sets, my tire shop is of the opinion that the Michelin option is better because it would be the same compound and belts all the way around. The Pirelli option has the Nero in the front and the rosso in the rear.

The SE30 was manufactured 15 years ago, surely the technological advances of the above mentioned tires should guarantee e safer and higher performing product than in 1995? Any problem with the "rounded sides" of the Michelin for the SE30?

Hello Alex,

the load index is very important, a secure thing. 90Y is too less. Must be 94Y.
A matching set is a must be on the VT. On the 2WD SE not but for better handling I would try to find a maching set.
About the rounded sides I cant explain the technical stuff they have told us, but its forbitten and not legal.
My personal opinion: I don`t want to play with my life, driving on german autobahns over 300 km/h I want to feel secure and safe with the perfect, machting, legal tyres.
But NO MORE are available - anything else is not legal, a risk or could destroy your car.

Can any oter SV or SE30 owners chime in with advice? The SE30 currently has Bridgestones that are 80% tread but date back to 1997, the speed rating is ZR but they are hard as plastic. They gotta go. Thanks. Alex

That is why I am trying to get an answer.

 

I just talked to Steve at Driven Exotics and he said he got two sets this month so if there is an issue somewhere, it must not be here in CA.

 

Like I said, P Zero Nero ar in stock, but the rears are Rosso

We checked the whole tyre market and there is NO tyre for the Diablo VT on the market!!!!
