Front bonnet foam seal

Dennis McCann had foam pieces that had to be trimmed to fit. I don't know if they still do.

Regardless, I frankley think ANY piece of 2" x 2" by 3' piece of foam could be trimmed to fit and would be very cheap.

 

Lowe's and Home Depot sell a square-section foam plastic that comes in rolls. I don't want to go out to the garage now, but the cross section is almost identical to the factory stuff (maybe 3"). It even has a peel-off strip with adhesive on one side, and is very inexpensive. I think it's mainly intended to seal around window-mounted A/C units.

I installed some about 4 years ago and it has held up perfectly. The worst part of the installation is scraping off what remains of the old, rotten foam rubber.

The first thing I noticed after replacing the foam was that the engine ran cooler with it back in place. It serves the purpose of preventing the air from diverting over the top of the radiator and reducing its effectiveness.

It you'd like, I can send a photo tomorrow, and also measure the dimensions. I can give you the exact length to cut.

 

The item you want to look for is: Air Conditioner Weather Seal, 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” x 42”.
The problem is that Lowe’s and Home Depot no longer carry that size. They only have the 1 ½” x 1 ½” strip and that is not enough to seal the gap. Believe me, I tried. The thicker seals are available online, though. I found mine at www.amconservationgroup.com. Item number P592. They are not the cheapest, but at $9.25 they are still reasonable, and they ship immediately. Here is the link:

By the way, these seals no longer have the adhesive backing, so you need some contact glue or similar to attach it to the lid.

Believe it or not, my body guy sourced the correct foam at a fabric store and made me a few copies by trimming the foam with an electric carving knife! They look and fit great. Fred

 

Hi Guys,

Is your foam applied to the top of the radiator or the bottom of the trunk/boot lid? I've always put mine on the top of the radiator. But my bodyshop put the new foam on the bottom of my trunk/boot lid. They are a concourse shop so should know their stuff. But I'm thinking in this case, it's wrong.

Mine is on the lid and has been there forever...if that helps

The foam should be stuck to the underside of the lid. No doubt about that.
