C, the image was taken with the sun causing the fabric to look shiny. On this particular car, as with almost all red (I refer to it as orange which it really is in its faded disposition) insert strip cars, the material is a velour fabric.

However, you raise an interesting point, because the factory did indeed relent and use red leather for the insert strips in at least one car. One such car is 56759 delivered to Colin Briggs in Scotland. That car is featured in CAR magazine's July 1986 issue, and you can see that the interior with red leather strips looks fantastic, much better than the fabric which quickly fades to orange.

I will have to scan the awesome images on page 146 of that issue because they show that the strips on the dashboard were also done in red leather - very cool.

In the article, Colin states that when he first ordered the car that way from Maranello, his request was met with the usual "Eet is no possible!". Then using a contact there, he persisted and eventually they relented and made the inserts using "Bridge of Weir hide, not the normal black Connolly (8500) that upholsters the seats".

He reports that he was "thrilled" with the outcome.

I'm not sure if Colin still has that car, but its special for that reason alone.

I am aware of at least one car in the USA that has gone to red leather as a modification to replace the aforementioned fading orange fabric.

Joe thanks for the interior details regarding the 288 GTO seat material choices. One point that seems to get glossed over was the seat material cloth was not a solid color when new. It went from light to dark from the top of the seat to the bottom and light to dark front to back on the base of the seat. I agree that the orange tone has taken over as the seats were exposed to sunlight over the years but that is different from a design characteristic where there is a change of color on the seat cloth when brand new.
Will look forward to those new images!

Was it 56 examples built with the cloth inserts on the seats?

C, I think 56 is close, but will we ever know the exact number?

    Oh Italy...

The alignment of the "B" and the "6" sort of stand out and the depression on the plate where they were struck. Also the "star" image appears to be a solid star within an outline of a star rather than only an outline of a "star". Those with the 'list' could comment on the actual serial number which from recent comments can't be an even number!
Just the fact that it has been painted over makes you wonder to.

I took this photograph, so I know which car it is and know what it says on the chassis plate above the steering column.
I am just confused as to why the numbers have been manipulated/altered and by whom.
This car's history is fairly well documented.

I thought the seat cloth inserts material was Nomex.

Paul: since the car is well-documented as you suggest, and since the chassis number on the chassis suspension mount is different from the car's original chassis number, I think in you should post which car it is (since you brought it up) and perhaps someone will see the post and satisfy our collective curiosity as to why a re-numbering has occurred.

I have the car as being sold to Jim Wallis, who has since passed away I believe. No further record.

Joe any comment on the 1500 mile car for sale at Professional Automobile Exchange even if it isn't a BAR car? No quibbles; unlike some other recent offerings...
    -
    -

1985 Ferrari 288 GTO Red/black with full leather, power windows and A/C. Only 1500miles with complete ownership history. This stunning piece of Automobile history is just 1 of 272 produced and has recently had the bell housing update completed and all the mechanicals from such little use sorted out. The new owner will be able to drive this car with full confidence and or put this car into their collection knowing it will meet every discerning Ferrari standard to pass the Classiche certification program.
Rarely does an opportunity come available on such a low mileage, original car that needs nothing to show or drive. Please contact Mike Haber for full details or a private showing
