Not aware of any green F1s ever making their way to the USA.

Also the story of the towels relates to bringing #042 home from MA to TX. Quoting the article in R&T on #042:

"We called the owner in Texas and he agreed the heat was a problem. "My wife and I had to pack the seats and side-panels with towels and blankets to insulate ourselves from chassis heat when we drove it home from Boston."

Certainly do - that is chassis #040 owned by the user 'flemke' on PistonHeads.com.

If you're really interested, a thread about his car and McLaren F1 discussion in general has stretched to a whopping 188 pages over there and it's not the first discussion they've had on their over the years:

Flemke - Is this your McLaren? (Vol 4)

    = = = = = =

Of course the ExoticSpotter photo description states the image was taken in Istanbul, and that's not correct at all. I recently addressed that 'error' and others included on that website in a post on another forum. I'll go ahead and repeat it here:

The freedom of contributors at ExoticSpotter.com to tell whatever story they choose when submitting a spotting makes some of the information offered there false or misleading.

That photo of Flemke's car was taken in Germany outside of Manthey Racing's facility. It came in a set of photos taken by Flemke's friend who posts on multiple forums under the name 'joe911'. Here's a link to the original of that shot which it is unlikely I'd be able to produce if this were just some random submission to ES.com, followed by a second photo from Joe's set that confirms its true location:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20I/114_1485.jpg

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20I/114_1491.jpg

There are a few more holes in the stories on ES.com

The New Zealand car above Flemke's is not a real LM, but does have an LM-spec engine. I don't think the person who submitted that one had any intent to deceive though - just misinformed.

The white F1 (#014) with the downforce kit on page two claims to have been spotted in Calgary, but in fact that image was taken at Moroso/PBIR in Palm Beach, FL. I have the original of that one too along with others.

The car immediately below that is chassis #016 and I'd be willing to bet that it has also never been to Istanbul. That photo was taken in Monterey, CA in 2006, with the original image part of a gallery on Supercars-.-net.

Page 3 shows a silver F1 (#068) pictured with a Ford GT, but that shot was also taken in the Monterey/Carmel area and certainly not in "Malibu" as the description implies.

The almost black F1 below that with the wing is also not an LM, but rather chassis #020 wearing the High Downforce Kit. Again, probably just an education issue, not an attempt to lie.

Page 4 has a shot of a silver F1 taken in "Pebble Beach". If you look closely at that image, you can see its the same car (#068) in the same location as the one from "Malibu" above. The 'believed to be owned by Ralph Lauren' statement is incorrect.

Bottom of page 5 has a photo of LM3 that is accurate as far as location, but was not snapped by some lucky spotter on I-95. That shot comes from a larger set taken by one of the guys from Turner Motorsports and shared on SmugMug.com.

Another frustrating point about ES.com is that some F1 spottings that were real and had real descriptions were removed from the site with seemingly no explanation.

You're certainly right - it is. Must have escaped my brain for that moment. Thanks for the correction.

I guess when I think of green, I think XP5 or #051 or the original paint on #073.

Here's a pic of #022 below for those who aren't familiar.

Of all the reading I've done on the internet, I think this is my favorite thread. It's very cool to read stories of these amazing cars. Erik & others, thank you very much for sharing, it is much appreciated :)

Are there any F1's in the midwest?? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be lucky enough to see one some day.

I am not aware of any F1 road cars in the Midwest.

GTR #17R pictured below belongs to BMW USA and is stored and prepped by Rahal-Letterman racing in Hilliard, Ohio.

Not sure what chance an outsider would have of getting to see the car though. They do bring it around to different motorsport events from time to time with the rest of the BMW Motorsports collection.

BTW: If you like this thread then you would probably love this forum. :)

Thanks for the link Eric, to Flemke's notes and comments on the McF1.

Not often you are able to find such detailed knowledge, let alone first-hand accounts both verifying and dismissing notions and thoughts many enthusiasts have had over these many years.

I would be quite pleased if somebody could pull said owner from PH's forums onto our turf here at FerrariChat. I'm sure Rob may find it in his motoring-heart to give this fellow a discount. :)

    Erik,

I've been following this thread since the start and am constantly amazed at your knowledge of the ultimate road car. Thank you very much for sharing with the community.

I've often heard of multiple F1s in Canada, though it's usually a "friend of a guy I know" type of claim. I know of the one car in Quebec owned by LS, though not sure of the chassis number (unless he's sold it)... question is, are there any others?

(my apologies if this has been covered... if so, I guess I didn't follow as well as I though ;))

    TIA

Thanks for the compliments. :) It should be obvious to most that I enjoy this subject just as much as many of you do. Okay, probably more if I am being honest. ;)

There may be as many as three other F1s in Texas now besides the one mentioned earlier which has indeed now moved on as Chris mentioned. For sure one of them is in Houston.

As for Canada, Lawrence Stroll has a pair now - the elusive grey road car as mentioned, and a longtail F1 GTR since 2006/2007 that is #23R.

His road car was actually last seen on a lift in the service area at Ferrari of Quebec in Oct 2008 when a McLaren technician had been flown in to service the car. Unfortunately no one I know was able to get close enough to it for identification. I would really love to know the chassis number as it would of course aid in settling other things as well. Talk of him keeping the road car in an underground garage at his home doesn't bode well for getting that though and I've heard he is not the most approachable guy either. :(

Anyway, I'll share some great images of his GTR taken at le Circuit Mont Tremblant below. What a wonderful car to own when you also have such an excellent facility to use it in.

There has also been one other mildly persistent rumor of a dark colored McLaren F1 somewhere in the triangle of Markham/Brampton/Toronto, Ontario. Nothing tangible has ever come of it, and I'm always hesitant to believe without proof, but I guess it deserves mentioning once again.

With the 15 year importation law in Canada, 2009 would have been the first year that a large portion of McLarens would have finally been elligible to enter the country. Obviously Mr Stroll beat that figure by at least 8 years since the car was first seen there in 2001. Perhaps we will see more arrive there as time ticks forward?

That about the F1s in Texas helped some.....any in the DFW/North Texas area that you know of?

Somebody over in the DFW thread said that there was a silver one here.

No sir, but that does not mean it could not be true. Feel free to look for it and let me know when you find it. ;)

One silver car is for sure in Houston, then #036 which is the light blue one discussed a little earlier has been photographed in Houston wearing a Texas plate but may not be there permanently, and the last one is a developing story but also not in the DFW area.

Wylie (mycarsux) took a pic of the 'Houston' F1 sometime last year. It is in the HOU Spotters thread in the Texas forum, not sure what page.

I'm in love with the blue w/ black wheels. Stunning!

'mycarsux' shared his story and those photos on another forum I participate on the night he saw the car. We had a nice chat about them over there - the car is #036 as I mentioned just a few posts up and spends some time in Louisana, and perhaps other locations as well.

The one that is there permanently in Houston is Silver - chassis #065 - the one that set the record at RM London in October 2008. Formerly it was in Singapore for a few years, but prior to 2004 it was McLaren's Park Lane showroom car in London.

I live in Toronto most of the year and have heard this rumor a time or two. The problem is that the location is always wildly different and the person telling the story 'heard' it from someone else who likely could not identify a McLaren from a Ford GT. There are just too many car enthusiasts and cell phone cameras out there for there to be NO evidence out there. I say it is an urban legend.

I prefer to think that too, but it has been repeated so many times by different sources that it had become hard to ignore. There are several cars out there like the Saleen and Mosler that do get confused with an F1 quite frequently.

Also some people forget McLaren made the SLR, so they hear of a McLaren and thing F1 automatically.
