That I did...seems like he's getting really intense by searching his personal info and his companies' holdings...yikes. Not sure I've seen this kind of thing on fchat before, lol.

I need to learn to read the whole thread first before replying to earlier posts, haha.

I just can´t understand why they get angry about the barcode but don´t bother about the name of the team: Scuderia Ferrari-MARLBORO. Explicit advertising there.

    Jim, I respectfully disagree.

That's like saying McDonalds is promoting diabetes or Ferrari is promoting severe head traumas. Both are medical conditions you can get from consuming their products.

Advertising on racecars is not habit forming but merely raising brand awareness. Big difference.

    Couldn't disagree more.

I don't smoke and have no affiliation with the tobacco industry. In fact I hated those bastards when they lied in front of congress that their products aren't addictive. But I have no problem with them advertising on racecars. In fact I like a lot of their liveries (JPS Lotus, Rothman's Williams, Marlboro Ferrari, Gitanes Ligier).

PS: I applaud the ban on smoking in public places, restaurants, offices etc. I don't want to get affected by second hand smoke. But an ad will not cause lung cancer. Choosing to smoke does.

I wonder if Ferrari could use another loop hole...

"Advertising" is just displaying someones brand in exchange for money. Could Ferrari not sign an extension with Marlboro, decide to place their logo on the car in full print, and drive around laps? I mean technically, they won't be getting paid for it so it's not advertising (or is it?).

Then, Marlboro decides to sponsor Maserati and overpays them for what little in return they get to make up for the actual cost of sponsoring Ferrari.

Did I make that confusing? Have Marlboro pay a different company within Fiat to sponsor and not Ferrari, but Ferrari uses the logos...

Marlboro should change their logo to the no smoking sign...they already have them everywhere so it's free to them to get their brand out, LOL! Sorta like that rap album that used that "parental advisory" logo as the entire album cover.

I agree strongly with Andreas about Mcdonalds. Here is another point to consider, Alcohol Advertising, Have you ever heard of a guy coming homr and bashing a family member because he has been out all night with a packet of smokes ? What about driving under the influence of Marlboro. Even if they forced Ferrari to remove the barcode, they are still known as Team Marlboro Ferrari.

BTW, I drink, smoke and drive fast cars, just not at the same time..

    Thanks.

I was thinking about alcohol advertisements as well. A Budweiser commercial doesn't equal promoting liver failure or dementia etc.

But, when it comes right down to it, tobacco advertising it illegal on race cars. So PM pays Ferrari some quantity of money, and in return, Ferrari paints -something- on the car.

That's advertising, right? And if advertising is banned, then Ferrari is acting contrary to the rules by having it on the car.

I agree with you that I personally don't think the ban is warranted, but them's the rules.

No doubt that you'd need a lawyer to be sure, but if there is any demonstrable quid pro quo the Scuderia would be in violation of EU law.
For a long time we've known that the FIA had a separate set of rules for Ferrari, does the EU have a separate set of laws as well?

This is Tobacco Advertising which is clearly banned.

There is also no question that advertising works and in this case leads to people smoking which leads to Cancer.

    Go Team Cancer Go!

I have asked numerous folk that watch F1 and asked them do they know what the Barcode means.

Guess what no-one knew, so carry on banging on about it, PM thanks you.

If they are breaking the rules so be it, it will be removed.

The phrase: bad publicity is good publicity ring any bells.

The chevron definitely suggested Marlboro. But the bar code? No way.

I am however a little surprised that the team name is "Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro" - That's gotta be right on the edge.

While on the topic, many years back I was running EJ in F3 with Marlboro money - Some PR dude comes by and gets pissed that there's a pack of B&H in the top of my toolbox... "Get me some Marlboro and I'll smoke those" says I. He returns with a carton and I've been smoking 'em ever since...... Best give away they ever had...

    Cheers,
    Ian

Ferrari took 1 billion from PM to promote PM's tobacco products which cause Cancer. The UK Government is investigating whether or not this promotion (Barcode) is in violation of UK Broadcasting regulations which would cause BBC to be banned from televising F1.

Not sure how that's good publicity.

    Of what?

You think The UK Government couldn't find that Barcode violates the TV Tobacco Ban?

You think if they do Ferrari will say: "Hard Cheese I'm going home" or take off the Barcode?

    Tax from cigs = 8.1 Billion (Politics.co.uk)
NHS spending on cigarette related illness = 1.7 Billion (money.msn.co.uk)

Plus they save all that pension money on those who die early from Smoking Related illness, but I still don't see that influencing their decision on whether or not Barcode violates UK Broadcast Law and if they find that it does banning it.
