Cameron should just retire. Forget doing a sequel. http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/movie-talk-james-cameron-king-of-DVD-sales.html
I thought it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my entire life. I cannot believe how popular it was.
Definitely overrated. I did enjoy the CGI visuals. Would watch again if they removed the bits with the humans in it hahaha. I haven't met anyone that thought the film was 5 stars but I guess going by the records they are out there!
You know, I watched it again a few nights ago (my roommate contributed to Cameron's new record...he really should just retire, good grief). It wasn't in 3D, nor was it in Blu-Ray. And I wasn't as captivated as I was the first time. Don't get me wrong--I went into the movie knowing that it was basically a movie that mixed Pocahontas and Dances With Wolves to tree-hugging effect. But I still liked it when I saw it. Now, after seeing it in 2D, I just don't really know anymore. It's got a ridiculous plot that wasn't executed as well as it could have been, and I think it needed the visuals to pull it off. Oh well. Cameron's made his money anyhow.
I just finished it, credits are running right now. Long movie, I don't get the hype, but it is a great story. Since I watched it on DVD, it wasn't as great visually, but I can see where it was popular visually wise. I liked it, a few parts were drawn out, but overall it was really good. I'll probably buy a copy on blu-ray later on.
Avatar breaks yet another record.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ytech_gadg/20100430/tc_ytech_gadg/ytech_gadg_tc1880
I think it touches a nerve in people, many of whom would love to live a more harmonious existence. Either that or they just really love 10-foot-tall blue chicks! Gotta hand it to Cameron. The man takes the oldest plots in the world, puts them on steroids, uses state of the art special effects and bang...he's king of the world!
I also thought it was boring. He may be king of Hollywood, but I have better things to do than watch his crap.
Avatar was in many ways like "Citizen Cane", which was a revolution in filming motion pictures. In "Cane", the story was some say, boring, but it was the movie which popularized en masse the new Deep Focus camera. This allowed for the entire movie set to be in focus because of an improved "F" stop. Before this, the movie set could only have in focus the foreground with background OUT of focus. With Avatar, sure, some people might have known it was a story re make of Pocahontas. BUT, it was, like Citizen Cane, a revolution in using 3D WITH computers and editing all together (3D by itself has been around forever). Thats its real significance, not so much the story line..... Cane and Avatar have both hit Hollywood like a ton of bricks.
There is no movie in existence where everyone agrees. Tens of millions of people loved Avatar and it is the highest grossing film of all time. Ultimately thats all that matters. I really enjoyed it but I can also name lots of films (some only costing $1mm) that I prefer.
