In 1977, the new Walter Wolf Formula One racing team won in Argentina, Monaco and Canada, beating Ferrari along the way. A hat-trick has never been completed in Formula One by any first-season team before or since (or so I read in MOTOR SPORT magazine). Wolf told me he accomplished everything he wanted to in F1 that very first full-time season. I recall him telling me about Jody (Sheckter) doing hot laps around Monaco and breaking the gearbox.

Formula One photographer Ranier Schlegelmilch sent me this series of images about 8 years ago. They show him with Walter Wolf and 1120148 in the South of France in 1976. He tells me they went for a drive and they went VERY fast (whatever that means). The steering wheel on the Countach you see in the interior shot is straight off an F1 car.

    Hi Joe

Yes I believe this car is still in Australia, although I heard the colour has been changed!

It featured very prominetly in various Australian Motoring magazines in 1980/81 from memory as it was the Lambo dealer in Melbournes Demo car and was used for lots of road tests!

Can I ask why you ask?

    Hope this helps,

    Pete

Awesome! I have a gentleman in a RHD country interested in a unique-liveried car. Can you find out who owns it?

Those are great pictures!! I notice the black 5000QV next to the red 25th has strange looking air vents. Do you know what is up with that? Maybe a transitional car before the 25th? Or a Modification?

Check out the rear spat too, it doesn't tuck under the tail like it should...

Perhaps what you are seeing is the distortion which occurs at the edge of an image when a fish-eye (wide angle) lens is used. Look at the Anniversary from left side to right side of the rear.

Schlegelmilch's images were used for the October issue of Road & Track in 1988, and both cars were taken out and tested.

Speaking of the Annivesario's engine, Paul Frere states: "it now has 470 bhp", obviously in reference to the carburetor version.

i think thats the smaller 10 or 13 inch personal fittipaldi wheel that a few teams use on there cars. that red wolf ct is in japan now but looks different with shinny wheel flares. i think i prefer the raw flat black boy racer look

schlegelmilch is an amazing photographer... ive have few of his racing books.

anyhow ive got some fantastic shots of the bravo on my pc that he's taken back in 79. can i send you a few to post up here? you wont be disappointed in them they are spectacular.

    warm regards

    hf

Brawn was not a first year team. Brawn was Honda, with Honda's car, Honda's people and Honda's money.

your correct if you read between the lines... but technically Brawn is listed as a first year team.

postelwaith and peter war wasnt entirely new when they created the Wolf Team in 77. wolf bought Hasketh and Williams in 75 before renaming the team to Wolf Racing.

In addition Brawn GP which is currently Mercedes GP, was previously Honda GP, British American Racing (BAR), and previous to that Tyrell GP.

Brawn's feat of being the only team to ever be WDC and WCC in their first year of competition may be a 'technicallity' but it should be no less significant as it is quite the feat considering that the previous year they had almost the worst car on the grid and less than two months before the start of the season the future of the team and the future career of the drivers was hanging in the balance. All this while not nearly as funded or preppared as their competitors. And to those who credit Brawn's success to a superior car all I can say is that the rules were the same for everybody and it is not Brawn's fault that the smartest and best financed minds in the world of motorsport could not interpret the rules as well as they did. Part of winning in F1 is making your own car and if your car is better than the rest you and your team did the best job. Haters need not apply.

But I digress. Getting back on topic those Paul Frere images are fantastic! As for the steering wheel on the Wolf car I am pretty sure that that is a Personal unit as previously stated. This was very much the norm in F1 at the time and by eye it looks to be the correct wheel for a GP car of the era.

Also it is really hard to tell from the photo however it looks like the Countach that Wolf is driving may have been fitted with a blue set of racing 4 , 5 or 6 point seatbelts. In the photo for sure he is not wearing them but they peek out from behind his shirt. Assuming that he is wearing the same shirt as when standing outside the car, the blue you see is not a pattern in the shirt and is likely seatbelts. Nice to see that Wold was all about safety on his high speed run :)

    Rob:

Wolf had blue Willans harnesses fitted to 1120148. He also had them fitted to 1120202, and 1121002. I cant say if they were 4, 5 or 6 point items. He had a tendency to use the same suppliers for his F1 cars for competition items installed upon his Countachs.

    Joe,

The car was regretfully repainted Black with black wheels in the late eighties when it was owned by Dr Geoffrey Edelstein and sported The number plate "Macho".Aussies might remember that well known AFL football player Warwick Capper used to drive round in it!! The car is still black and currently located in Adelaide. It is rarely driven and the owner is very private. Suggest you contact Mark from LCCA to see whether he has contact with the owner.

The first modified Countach (factory approved) with wide body 1120148 and 345 tyres that later becomes the Countach S. Supposedly it has a different engine than the regular LP400. In the 70s WW had tons of $ from his Oil business and his Lambos are cost-is-not-an-issue mods.
