How many hours do you guess you have in this engine project so far Mark? If I had that much left on my "to-do" list, I too would have two beers next to me at all times! Looks great! I'm so impressed. Keep it up!

    Mark,

You Are a master at welding... just a bit of fill in the dish, a gentle cut on the mill and voila! the correct chamber shape on the pistons. ;)

    Just kidding.

    Everything is looking just marvelous.

    Tom...

Yeah I agree, after 327,743 views it is time to face up Mike! Like 100's of others I've been kicking back at night and waiting in anticipation for your latest posts and pictures, but I am constantly wondering "who is this masked marvel of the mill and welder?"

I want to see a picture of Mrs. Mike. In my 63 years I've never encountered a woman with such patience and understanding. I had come to doubt any such creature existed. Just once, before I go to the Great Pitstop In The Sky I would like to lay my eyes on the visage of this woman of legend. She is as rare as a Unicorn. As revered as the Taj Mahal, Victoria Falls, and a certain Industrial Estate in the small town of Maranello, Italy.

You guys will have to settle for manifold pics for the time being.

I finished welding on the last 2 runners, milled the end and welded on what will be the top flanges.

The TBs have what was their a mounting snout that is about 5/8" long which would stick right out the bottom of my flange but since I'm only going to be using it to locate the TB so I'll cut it down it 1/4"....maybe 1/8". I'll do that next so I can fit the TBs once I start finish machining the intakes.

This morning I chopped 1 or the TB snouts down to 1/8". Then milled the top flange on 1 manifold from 4" wide to 3.5 (finish will be about 3.75 with some profile) and cut the thickness down from 1/2" to 3/8"....I may go a little thinner before I'm all done. Tomorrow I'll bring manifold 2 to the same condition as the first one and I think mill the bottom flanges flat...then I guess it's tim to start putting holes in for bolts and TBs.

For the air box I’m going to try to use one of the QV plenums I cut apart then never used for the supercharger project. The top of the velocity stacks will be in the air box then I will have a spacer that goes between the TB and air box to make adjusting the length possible….I think. I may change my mind when I try to build it next week.

    Mark,

Maybe it was discussed, I may have missed it, but I'm a little puzzled||:

Initially when you had cut the bottom flange, I thought you were going to do all the shaping and drilling and then split the material in half, but it looks like you're starting to mill stuff to the required thickness: Why so heavy?

Also, are you keeping the flanges all attached to eachother in one row of 6? That's an awfully long strip of material (and quite a lot of it) to create tension when it starts expanding at a different rate as the head. Is this not a problem?

I want the bottom flange relatively thick because I couldn’t fit as many bolts as I would have like and I don’t want leaks. I am going to cut away quite a bit of material between the ports, but the thickness will be about 7/16” when it’s done.

The top flange I’m still pondering a bit as I think about the TB linkage. I’m thinking I’ll leave a web or rib between the ports but probably drop down to ¼” or 5/15” thickness.

Thermal stresses, I’m not sure. The lower flange will be pretty close to the head temp so that shouldn’t be a problem but I need to think about the top flange.

I made the 2nd one look like the first one this morning so no real point in pics. Tomorrow I shpuld be able to get the bottom flange cut and drilled of both manifolds and maybe get them flipped back over and get going on drilling the tops but that will most likely be thursday.

Someone posted a pic of Mark and his kid on this site, maybe it was not in this thread I sure don't know where/how to find it. But he looked quite normal, like Superman in his Clark Kent clothes.
