I'm an AT&T user and am satisfied and plan to stay with them. I have never owned a "smart phone" but have decided to buy one. The device I really want is the HTC Legend and although it's GSM (as is AT&T) it runs the Edge data system instead of 3G. So, I can use it on AT&T, but I will not get full advantage of AT&T's data program.

What I'd like to know, specifically, is, what will I give up by not having access to 3G? I use the phone for personal use only, no business applications required.

    Thanks for the help.

    Jack.

    Speed.

    My experience - FWIW, YMMV, etc;

My first iPhone was EDGE only, and the WWW pretty much sucked.

Email and other "batch" apps were fine, but you'll always be looking for wi-fi for anything else. (IMHO)

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Edge = sucks
3g = sucks less than edge
AT&T = sucks all the time.

And yes, I went through YEARS of suffering with AT&T, camped in line for the first iPhone, bought 3g, 3gs, and they all sucked. iPhone is o.k. AT&T is the llamas armpit.

Now, on Verizon 3g with a Droid, I'm perfectly content.

What kind of person camps outside a store for a consumer item that is going to be produced in the millions? What level of desperation do you need to get to in order to do this? Do you not have a life? Seriously, I want to know how you got to the point where camping outside a store for a phone seemed like an acceptable idea to you? I always thought such people were ultimate losers who had lost all perspective...never imagined someone on here would be in the ranks. I really want to understand...I hope you are not insulted, I am genuinely curious. Looking back, do you think it was a mistake or are you proud to have done it? Would you still do it?

And yes, AT&T sucks. Big time.

So....all I give up with Edge vs. 3G is some speed, particularly as to web access, and that's it? Not such a bad trade-off to have a nice smart phone that isn't Apple.

No I don't regret it. It was a spur of the moment thing, and I had a GREAT time meeting totally new people, enjoying a sunny day, and reliving the feeling of skipping school to goof off 25 years ago.

Loser? Yeah, that's me. You nailed it.

Back on subject... the iPhone is a fine device but AT&T is the Achilles heel. Even with 3G, the coverage is spotty and the network is overloaded. I bet if the roles were reversed and Verizon had the iPhone while AT&T had the Droid, we'd be hearing similar gripes of Verizon.

Nailed it, except my 3g of choice is Tmobile with my G1. Great phone, great network. :)

From pitbulls to cellphones, you seem to have a problem treating other users with common courtesy. 7-day vacation.

3g also lets you do voice and data at the same time so you can talk on the phone and download or browse or whatever you want to do.

What is it exactly that makes you want the Legend?

Edge does not accommodate multi-tasking, then?

I prefer Android and HTC's Sense UI.

I didn't realize the multi-task feature was in any way related to the data network.... BUT, EDGE is so slow, that it would be a moot point. Multitasking on Edge would be like trying to watch YouTube on a 300 baud dial-up modem.

The only multi tasking you wouldn't be able to do on Edge is talking on the phone and browsing the web at the same time.

You may run into some problems with speed if you are trying to run several apps that use a lot of data at the same time, like listening to Pandora and browsing the web at the same time.

I've had several phones that were Edge only and it wasn't a big deal, the phone has Wifi for those times where you want the web to be faster.

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like I could probably use Edge without it being too annoying. Checking email, navigation and only occasional web browing would be the main non-phone uses for me.

For you it is - since Verizon uses CDMA - and a limitation of CDMA prevents data and voice at the same time. Once Verizon goes to LTE, this goes away.

    Thanks for all the input.

Just to recap, to make sure I get it (a little thick on tech matters)....I can do anything with Edge that I could do with 3G, only slower. Right?

A "definite maybe"..... Yes, technically, the same protocols are there so if it'll load under 3G it'll (eventually) load under EDGE. However, I suspect (but don't know) that, eg, Pandora won't be useable. Anything that "streams" lots of data will at best be "painful", and at worst, unusable.

    My 02c, cheers,
    Ian

All of the streaming media will work. Pandora, Last FM, Youtube, etc will all work fine on Edge, they may buffer from time to time but will still work. The original iPhone had all of these things and it only ran on Edge.

Thanks. the plan is to wait for the new iPhone to see if it will tempt me to stop being Apple-free. If not, I'm going with the HTC Legend and live with Edge.

Edit: I just saw on Engadget that an HTC Legend for AT&T is at FCC for approval (as of 5/4/10). That would seal the deal.

    Jack.
