A serious flat spot could cause failure because these tyres are not like our road tyres and very thin and light (for obvious reasons). Thus he could have worn through to the carcase ... plus it causes huge vibration issues.

Like I've said, lots of drivers can be temporarily fast by destroying the car under them, but only the really, really good ones can be fast and be easier than others on their car, such as Clark, Stewart, Lauda and Fangio.

LH is moving out of my top 3 drivers on the current grid, and its sad because there is so much potential that is going un-nurtured.

All this despite the fact that McLaren has confirmed Speed's suspicion that it was a rim failure?

And they'd have no reason to mislead...
With most any other driver I'd be certain to give the benefit of the doubt but there's no denying that Lewis is hard on the equipment.

Heikki had the exact type of rim failure in that exact corner. It's a rim problem. As Mike said, it's a wheel, driver style shouldn't have a bearing on it's life.

Bad example. A rim failure is more akin to exhaust failure.

Some people will just fail to acknowledge this. Basically, a rim will not fail unless its shape is compromised either by defect or damage. Driver style has nothing to do with it.

Excessive curb hopping is a driver fault and does lead to rim failures ...

Just a comment, not picking on LH.

Curb hopping could lead to suspension failures in a Formula 1 car, but a rim? I seriously doubt it. How many broken rims have we seen in Formula 1 races in 70 years?
