Each dealer gets an individual allocation. So some may have lists while others may not depending on their market. Shop around is the best advice.

Yes there are lists. The dealer would love to sell you a car. They won't hassle you just for the fun of it.

As to the used one, when you spend 200 grand on a car, you're usually pretty picky on what you want.

 

If he's close to his dealer he can't necessarily go to another out of his area as they're not supposed to sell him a new car.

Nonsense. The sales on Californias are slower than expected by FNA. You ought to be able to find one at another dealer. It sounds like the one you went to is not motivated to make a sale. It is possible that all of their allocation is spoken for in the near future (I doubt it). FNA is rather particular about dealers selling outside their region. There are some dealers on the east coast who who be very happy to get you into a Cali-soon.

 

Why "nonsense"? So, the dealer is intentionally turning away a customer just because he can? Yah, sales are soooooooooo good let's just do a little mind messing with a new customer. I bet the salesman went in the back and laughed it up with the boys by the water cooler.

That to me is nonsense.

Why is it such nonsense to believe the dealer's allocation of the California is sold out? Some people like owning the best convertible GT in the world.

 

Even if it's the BEST CONVERTIBLE GT IN THE WORLD there's no denying that sales have slowed. FNA admits this. Dealers admit this. Saying that a dealer's allocation is sold out is somewhat misleading. Allocation may be sold out for the next 2-3 months but who knows if that's the case when September rolls around. Here's something to think about: if we agree that the California IS the best GT car in world there's something amiss that after being in production for just 9 months sales are coming to a grinding halt? Just my 2 cents worth.

 

Plus they're laying off peeps at the factory. They're probably looking at the 458 to save things now.

Who says California sales have come to a grinding halt? The California IS selling well...IMO people have come too reliant on buying a Ferrari as an "investment" and when they see that a particular model isn't commanding a premium they're all too quick to cast off the car as a failure.

 

Jeff: It's the econony. We need to stop slamming a great car just because the economy sucks. It's not fair to the car, not fair to those who own them, and not fair to those who want them.

Also, we need to stop spreading rumors to new F-chat members that dealers are screwing with their heads just to be pig headed ninnies messing with rookies.

I agree with you 100% .. it's the economy. I wasn't trying to belittle the California. It's that some dealers are giving the impression that their entire allocation is sold out. They don't know what their allocation is going to be 6 months from now. Even if they did, they couldn't be 100% sure that FNA would honor the allocation. In the past, FNA has been known to take away allocation. The dealer should be honest with a new customer and say "I don't know what my allocation numbers will be in November". Instead they tell the new customer "I'm sold out." Leaving the customer will little hope of getting the Ferrari of their dreams.

I don't want to get on the bad side of f chatters. There was no disrespect intended in my comments.
I have a California and I love it. I felt that a dealer's unwillingness to hook somebody up is reminiscent of the arrogance of past times. Indeed, Californias have been moving, albeit not at the level which is has been purported that Ferrari intended. In my naive opinion, if one wishes to place an order for a Cali, it ought to be taken. There are allocations out there not being fulfilled. I suppose in a place like Greenwich there is more demand, and hence more saturation of allocation, for Ferraris than elsewhere. I understand that the 458 may necessitate a bit of a longer wait as more purists will want to get their hands on it. I love the California. I hope everybody who wants one can experience it and not feel excluded for dumb reasons. The "wait list" should not be an if, but when.

Secondly with Ferrari laying off hundreds of workers why any authorised dealer would not encourage a prospective purchaser to order a new Ferrari is idiotic period.

This total BS, that you can't buy a New Ferrari at an Authorised Dealer Today, is getting very old. This week I bought a NEW Scuderia from an authorised Ferrari dealer for substantially under msrp.

This is a Huge change and anyone who can't see it is deluding themselves.

New Ferrari's have not sold at Authorised Dealers for below msrp. since the 308 GT4 in 1973.

 

Dick Merritt has told me tales of the days when he was selling Ferrari in the early 70s during the gas crisis; they couldn't give away Dinos and Daytonas. Some languished for more than a year at the dealership. The dealers have had it easy for a couple of decades, no?? The required shift in attitude must be a b!tch.

 

I agree, it's almost like people are disappointed not to see massive scalping and a sort of gold rush upon launch.

I know more than one former Ferrari owner who pretty much only bought them to ride the quick money wave -- stay on the list, buy at MSRP, drive a year, flip to capture the initial premium and then get into another car.

Now maybe the focus will be more on whether the cars are worth the money compared to competitors from Porsche, Lamborghini, etc.

 

This includes dealers who are deluding themselves too.

I can't remember but wasn't the 348 sold below MSRP?
