Yes, the year 2012 is in fact real. (Ok, in the abstract sense that ANY of
our so-called "years" is "real" - it's just a mutually agreed upon concept to
    express time... but I digress).

Everything predicted to happen in 2012 likely is not.

But hasn't stopped Hollywood and the History Channel from making a tidy sum on it.

I just heard last night that Edgar Cayce believed that 2038 is the "real" end date according to some inscriptions in the Great Pyramid.

    Whatever.

Someone should start a company today where they offer to buy everything you own for perhaps 30% of its true worth: house, cars, life insurance policies, everything. Obviously contractual and legal. Pay the person now or monthly and they live it up for the next 18 months.

You take possession on December 22, 2012.

It's true...on December 21st, 2012 all of the stars and crap will line up like they say. That happens every December 21st, though.

    Isn't it the Winter Solstice?

From what I've heard, it is just when their calender stops and starts over again.

IMO, this whole end of the world shenanigans is a bunch of BS.

No idea what will happen in Dec 2012

Jan 1, 2011 is going to be plenty bad when my taxes rise 150% overnight

Compared to that Dec 2012 is not worrying me so much

The one thing I've read about 2012 that makes sense scientifically is that our solar system has been gradually moving through the Milky Way galaxy and we may encounter a high traffic area for asteroids, comets etc.

1 medium size asteroid impact will give all 6 billion of us a really bad hair day

Meanwhile I'm preparing but if wer'e all gonna die anyways I'm buying a Ford GT & maybe a Phantom so I can reach the Apocalypse in style :)

This is true; a Mayan explained it to me as follows: The calender doesn't end, it just starts over with a new calender and all the Mayans are laughing at the rest of the world for making all this BS up.

I find it hard to believe that a culture that could predict the end of the world could not see the Pizarro and De'Sotto coming much sooner!

That was my first thought back when the Y2K-end-of-the-world morons were hogging AOL chatrooms (remember those AOL days?). I used to bust on them and said if they really believed all that crap, they would simply sign over all their possessions to me as of 01/01/00. No one ever took me up on that :)

I heard the same broadcast and thought the show was way better than the usual hot air.

You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows, and you don't need a mystic to see that humanity is painting itself into a corner. Homo sapiens is capable of putting its OWN SELF in checkmate.

Fortunately, 2012 is not that far away, so we can look back on 12/31/12 and survey the timeline.

Probablem is, too many interpretations follow the human inclination to fixate on the most fearful, deer-in-headlights, doomsday imagination (which conveniently omits the human instinct to survive).
