Please excuse me if this is a silly question, but I am new to Ferrari. There's a whining noise that I can hear while driving (not when stationary) it seems to be coming from the gear lever but I guess it's actually coming from the engine. It sounds like gears meshing at high speed and I just wondered what is this noise, and is it normal? It's quite noticeable. It seems to go quieter as the engine warms up and eventually pretty much goes away.
Had a whining noise just this morning on a rally in the mountains. Finally got it to stop by telling her I'd take the turns a little slower and we'd stop for lunch soon! Mike in Denver
I dont see in your profile what year you have. But if its a FI, then maybe the airpump for emissions. mine starts out pronounced but quiets down as it warms up. But it doesn't go away.
I only have a whining noise when the credit card bill arrives after I go and buy parts. The whining seems to subside if I get the mail first. Shipping stuff to work seems to help as well. Seriously it is hard to diagnose noises over the internet. Best to find someone who has the same car and go for back-to-back rides and see if you should be concerned. Reminds me of a local Ducati Night gathering here. All of us with Bevel Twins wound up talking about the racket the cam drive train makes. All of us were concerned that it was too loud in each our engines and that something expensive was going on. So we all started our engines one at a time with everyone listening. I suspect that all of us except one - because someone has to have the noisiest even if it is normal - went home feeling much better. I know I felt much better after hearing a few of the others!
Do a search on it, I read up on it before somewhere on here... there was also a youtube link where a guy was filming his whining ferrari, you'll see if it sounds the same.
