SL63, Mercedes-Benz..Anyone have one?

I've been thinking about getting an SL63, can anyone chime in with their experiences?

 

I've sold many.........basically trouble free cars........it's not a high performance sports cars as you'd think due to the MB/AMG marketing, and that is from a purely from the seats of the pants feel. It's really a highway cruiser.......

 

its fast (in the straight line), comfortable, and sounds great. I still prefer my 911 cab tho.

 

I have never driven an SL63 but I have a lot of experience with the 6.2 liter AMG engine and I can tell you that the 600 motor is ten times more pleasurable. The 600 is a little bit more money but it is worth it.

The torque that comes out of that bi-turbo V12 is fabulous...it is one of the best engines I have ever experienced (I am a sucker for V12s though). The 6.2 liter AMG engine is very sporty for a MB engine but it still does not feel sporty. In the SL (S and CL) you want (or at least I would want) a powerful silky smooth engine. Also with those AMG models you can hear to exhaust when you are stopped and the car is idling...which feels completely out of place in a luxury car.

 

Don't buy an AMG if you don't want to hear the exhaust.

 

Thanks for the feedback....actually I DO NOT want to hear the exhaust (already have cars that cover that category nicely).

Anyone know when the replacement body style is coming for the SL?

 

I'd imagine some time still left to go. The current style was release at the Geneva show in 2008.

 

It is hard to say. That body style came out in 2002 so the current one probably does not have more than 2 years. If you are up for a used one you wont have to worry about getting killed on the initial depreciation which would make dumping it for the new body style in a few years not feel so bad.

 

I don't know what others think, but I love the car. All the power you want, coupe when you want it and convertible when you want that. All the amenities with AC/Heated seats, airscarf, well tuned suspension. Very sleek looking, handles really well for a big car.

I don't think you can go wrong with it personally. As for the exhaust, it sounds great and not intrusive unless you really stomp it. Good luck with the purchase, I think you will really enjoy it.

The current SL is one of the best cars in the world...no question about that. You really just need to drive the SL550 (which is no slouch) the SL63 and the SL600 as it will come down to personal preference (even though I know it is almost impossible to not pick the 600 out of those three).

 

explain why you pick the 600 vs the others...?

 

I have to agree with the SL600 being the better choice for performance. While I too like the sporty stance of the AMG63 model, the torque of the turbo V12 is just incredible. Obviously the SL65 is the one to have but certainly not worth the $200k plus price tag. I think you can get a 2010 SL600 with a sport pack for $120ish if you shop it around.

That being said I was at auction in Palm Beach on Wednesday and was happy to see 09 model SL63s in the high 70s. low 80s with good miles

 

The 600 is just the best. You get the classy exterior that does not look over done like the AMG models and you have a monster under the bonnet...it is a wolf in sheep's clothing. You get the best Mercedes wood and leather on the interior. The 65AMG has too much power in my opinion. You have to be careful with the accelerator pedal or the traction control system comes in and cuts all the power...which is kind of annoying when you are just trying to pull out of a driveway.

The V12 is silky smooth and the sound it makes when you step on it is just want you want from an ultra powerful luxury car. You get 612lb/ft from 1800rpms-3500rpms...this makes a big difference when compared to the 63.

 

30k miles is reasonable for an '09? The color doesn't help either...

 

Never had that problem with mine. The accelerator is not an on off switch. I think the car is quite docile around town and great when you want to get on it. One of the best engines I have ever had.

 

You are right. Perhaps I exaggerated a bit. I have only driven a 2005 (W215) CL65 AMG and when you stepped on it hard the traction computer did not really know what to do. I imagine the newer ones have gotten better.
