Maybe it's just me but I like the look of the horsey. I think it will be a big blank spot and look odd without something to fill it. How about an actual shield with a chrome horse? I've got a couple and would be more than willing to send one your way! I think just the chrome horse with the outline of the shield machined or in fin style would look better but the offer is there if you want. Let me know and I'll see if I can scrounge up or shoot a pic of the shield.
I like the horse in the center but I don't like a cast chromed one for this. I'd prefer a flat aluminium one, with no relief. And of course, in any case, a smaller one.
Is this the same forum where everybody wanted me to leave the air box off so we could see the HUGE TBs, but now a horse is too much??? It's not just you, I agree and my vote counts at least twice And thats so much for the offer of a shield, but I think just the outline is the way to go. I agree with the thought that sock stock in the 80s would not get a horse/shield, but stuff out of the racing department probably would have so while the horse screams "I'm not stock" to anyone who has 1/2 a clue what they are looking at but anyone with 1/2 a clue what they are looking at will know a V12 doesn't belong in a 308......but I think the horse say "it's not stock, but it sure looks like it could be a special that rolled out of the race group?...hmmmm????"
Reminds me of this boxer (okay maybe a little harsh), avoid the owner installed horse at all costs and go for the subtle "im cool" look. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm just a lurker, completely addicted to this thread. What about installing the horsey to fill the void but glass blast it, just enough to give it a satin finish like the alu of the cover youre modifying? Just enough to get the chrome effect out of the engine compartmnt. ok back to the lurking.... I tell you this thread is addictive.
No horsey, looks completely cheap. Machine v12 in the raised part instead, and leave it raised without fins. Pete
If your really into the horsey's, why not put 12 individual filters on it, the kind with the round flat metal tops. Then you could put 12 horsey's on it! Just kidding. I also vote for no horsey on the plenum. Mark, there are probably a great many enthusiasts out there that are virtually speechless, silent actually, and one can imagine a number of automotive journalists sitting quietly. So that motor needs no bling. You blinged it when you started cutting the head studs out of the block. Everything since has been a state of shock. Seriously, we need to make up some jokes that mimic Chuck Norris jokes. Mark Eberhardt doesnt weld. He looks at aluminum and it complies to his wishes out of sheer terror.
Mark doesn't modify his Ferrari, he just stares at it until his sheer will forces it to grow extra cylinders.
+1 I agree with Paul on this one... But, Its your car, do whatever YOU want. God knows I've pissed off plenty of purists and judges with the things I've done to my car. ... an option for subtlety - after you finish machining the ribs, you'll need to blast the entire casing to give it that fresh out of the sand look (I'd recommend medium ground glass at low pressure for this). Use your CCC (cheap Chinese cavallino) as a blasting mask to "ghost" in the image if you want it there. If you don't like it you can always machine the area flat and do the shield and cavallino like you intended originally. Rick
have to disagree with those who say no horsie. This is a custom engine, of course he should make sure it's obvious, be a show-off. Having it look like the v8 only wider (or longer, depending on how you look at it) would be a bit sad: people could actually walk by and not notice! Add the horsie and everyone will notice this is definitely not the same engine that's in every other 308. Imagine that plenum in red with the top of the fins and the shield/horse brushed.
If the individual looking needs to see a horse to KNOW its not a Jag V12 in a 308 for example then why are you even having a conversation with this person? My wife once asked me why there are so many horses on my boxer inside? All OEM by the way. The radio, the EQ, the console, the speedo and tach, the mirrors and my key chain all have horses on them. The 308 is no better in this department and of course it says ferrari on the engine too. She wanted to know if they had all these horses everywhere in the event the owner (or passenger) forgot it was a ferrari they were looking at. If he really needed to indicate its a ferrari engine then stick with the 308 theme and have FERRARI script on the cam covers, like ferrari would do it if they offered such an engine in a 308.
That was the 1st plan. I was going to cut it out of the 400 cam covers and weld it on the TR covers to give them the 308 cover look....it wouldn't fit very well though and I alway though it was too much. A horse on the other hand......
Hey Mark, here's something you've been looking for. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-308-GTB-engine-hood-fibreglass-vetroresina-/260611580893?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AFerrari&hash=item3cada923dd
No, no.....I don't have any money to BUY one. Plus the stock ones are almost as heavy as the steel one and are not the QV grill style. It's ont he need to make befroe I re-paint the car list....ie not on the current working list provided I can keep the engine hieght under the stock deck lid.
Know anyone who can cast one out of aluminum? Polished, it would look like part of the cover, and not an addition. Just a thought. Shiny Side Up! Bill
Stick the old nag on your PC scanner. Bring it into photoshop and make an outling tracing. Save the file as a pst or bmp file and put it on a stick. Take that down to your local water jet cutter along with a chunk of 5mm alloy sheet and have him cut the nag. It will be perfect, fat finished and once fused to the cover with the ribs running towards it and at the same height, it will look very smart. Forget the chrome grille type. Crap!
There is no need to jump through any of these hoops as the horse could be cnc milled directly on the airbox either as a raised or depressed feature.......it's not going to be though. I'm using a chrome horse because that is what I want and my "vote" is the only one that actually counts
Well, your and Chuck Norris' vote counts. He can make that horse with the fist hiding under his beard.
