the deal was done in '68. The company was broke cos Enzo spent all the money on racing, it was going to be either FIAT or Ford and I suspect the Italian govt couldn't stand the idea of Ford.

the "official" story is that the Ford takeover was a done deal until Enzo found out he would have to get executive approval for any expenditure greater than $1000 at which point he told them to piss off.

They were a little miffed and decided to show Enzo how good they were by building that monstrosity the GT40 and couldn't get it to beat Enzo's cars until they ran 7 litres

No John, Ford had no capability, they hired Lola to build the GT40 for them. The only Ford part was the engine block.

there is one story I have read many years ago about Ford running fuel inside the chassis to try and get some decent range out of the car during the Le Mans 24 hr, true ?

I knew Ford had Lola build the car but it was in response to Enzo's reneging on the deal due to the $1000 sign off

hmmm, given it's a monocoque, would be unlikely. There are no long chassis rails or a roll cage or similar places where you could hold a worthwhile amount of fuel. Possibly a journalist confused because the fuel bladders lived in the sills.

They're not nice cars to drive, one of those rare situations where the car feels larger around you than it really is, the reverse of what a good car does. They only won in 68 & 69 because of the rule changes - and then Porsche took over. But the sport was already becoming too specialised for a tiny company like Ferrari to do as a sideline to F1.

btw interesting Lola T70 article in Octane this month, that suggests that the FIA changed the capacity rules because the big sports cars were becoming too popular in Europe and threatening their premier product - F1.

Later CanAm became a big success in the US and if you've ever watched them at the Laguna Seca historics, it's easy to see why. Lots of overtaking, lots of powerslides, the ground shakes as they go by - just fantastic.

in defence of Brett though, if the car is bought second hand from a non ABN entity (bloke on the street) then GST is not applicable, but if the buyer is a dealer then sells the car then GST is included in the sale price.

Thats where GST sucks, backyarders are getting away from collecting and paying GST

I only asked because some quote it and some don't. I thought perhaps that like some other taxes GST was not applicable for RACE cars. EG you can bring in an F40 avoid paying some taxes but will never be able to drive it on the road.

Sorry to ask a question that I thought was legitimate.

Thank you Goober, I was thinking the same thinig. I haven't charged GST on any 2nd hand cars I've sold and don't have personnel registration in order to track such a transaction. You've answered my question as to why some quote and some don't.

    **** Horse, Ask Goober. ;)

As is the case with my business, I like a bit of in and out. :). So obviously some have bought the Race cars through their business.
