Hey guys, I've spent some time researching and am fairly close to committing to a 612. Seems like the only logical choice for me as I have a daughter and this is the only car I can enjoy with my family together. Question for you veterans. We all know the new 612 is coming 2011. Just wondering what everyone thinks will happen to the current 612 prices once this happens? I take a look at the 456 and these are in the 50-60K range. With 612s in the mid 100s right now, I'm thinking that within the next year, this will drop to under 100K? What are everyone's thoughts on this? Much appreciated.
A 2+2 Ferrari when near new is always a depreciation challenge, the early cars will settle above 456Ms eventually, I'd say 80-120K in today's $$. The question you have to think about is utility of use. It will ALWAYS be cheaper in the future to acquire, it will also be older etc. Maybe it'll cost you 30K in depreciation over the next 2 years - is that worth it to you to have those two years to use it? Bearing in mind the guy that did the first 300 miles in my car paid 75K for them
There is no comparison to a 456 and a 612 - I mean none! There are a limited number of the 612, all aluminum body and frame. The 612 weighs 4000 and the 599 3750 and the Cali weighs 3600 - I hope my numbers are correct. This is the best dd Ferrari ever made and I don't see the 2011 effecting the current model, my guess is something we have not seen will be under the 2011 hood. I tried hard to sell the 612 and move to a different model - 540 hp and the most elegant looking Ferrari on the road with a mean arse sound - good luck beating it
I do think the 612's have more room to fall. The new 612 will cause some additional drop in price but generally the drop has more to do with that the 612 has not been well loved across the board. While we all very much disagree with others dislike for the 612, many do not see it as a classic---only time will tell. My thought is that we will continue to see the 612 drop below the 80K-120K over the next 2 years. Many are daily drivers(which is great) and will have a more miles than any F-Car out there based on the year produced. They will be the best bang for the buck out there..not hard to see when you look at the 456 or even now the 550 & 575's prices seems so low. The buy on a 550 or 575 which were also $250K cars new is now in the $70K-120K range and both were effected by the launch of its predecessor the 599. Long story is they still are coming down but it seems to at least be slowing down. In Aug of 2008 the least expensive 612 out there was $180K--now that same car is $100K.
without a doubt you will be able to find them below 100k. It will happen. No I am not a doom and gloomer, but you are off your rocker if you think that the car is going to stay above 100 forever. ESPECIALLY if the new car is significantly more attractive. The 612 is not pininns best shape... and that is widely acknowledged. I happen to like it... but its not for everyone. They won't all be bellow 100... but there will definitely be cars in that range.
Thanks guys, I'm in the same camp. I keep trying to convince the dealers to make a deal with me and move the darn thing before the official new car is released because after that, it will be that much harder to move. I hear you about the wait factor. This is my first Fcar, and I'm in my early 30s, and granted someone already took the $150K depreciation ahead of me, some kind of sense just tells me why step into a car now when you know there's another 30-50K discount right around the corner. I also wonder what the new 612 will look like. The spyshots we've all seen seems to show that it will look predominantly the same. Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know if I end up making any moves.
Just a mild correction . The California weighs 3925 at the curb ready to go. The 599 weighs 3865 and the 612 weighs 4260 both are curb weights. The 599 actually weighs less than the California, thank God for the DSG gear box and 7 cogs.
Good Luck as 30 - 50k will take 2-3 years or more. The demand is higher than the supply look at Dupont or any other number of 612's vs 430's or 599's. The dd depreciation on any high end car is 20-30k a year. Making the 612 the best deal out there for a dd even under your scenario.
If that's how you feel, then buy a nice, late 456M and don't worry about the depreciation. You can drive it for a few years and then buy a 612 later. Or, if there is value to you in having a newer car, then buy the 612 now and pay the price.
"granted someone already took the $150K depreciation ahead of me" $150k depreciation would be better than what I was offered by a dealer for my '08 OTO! Though my car has, for a Ferrari, high miles - 14,000.
"Can you advise what they offered you?" First offer, no negotiation at all, proposed trade-in. Can look up sticker if you'd like, I think it was appx $340k. 2008 OTO (one of the early OTOs) w/ 14.5k miles. $160k. Yes, I am the first owner, but I think most of us knew what we were getting into. It's been a fantastic car. I may keep it! So, what would retail be, I wonder?
I was offered 175K on my '08 with 15K after saying "really" on the 160 offer I got Kept the car mind you. That was 4 or 5 months ago and I now have a couple of thousand more miles. I'd say 170 would be a great trade and that car would retail at 185-195. There are still unsold, '09s and '10s sitting around the dealer network. There's no way any of those cars are worth within 100K of their original MSRP. IF you want a 612 AND a 458 or 599 GTO, buying one of those 612s would be a good angle to get in line for a 458 you might not otherwise be able to buy and might hurt the ego less than paying over MSRP for the 458 or GTO.
I was told that there is 20% mark up at the dealer on a Ferrari - so I am guessing at least that as they have carrying costs. I guess when you look at the guys who paid 200 over for a 599 the ouch factor is soothing as they are taking a 300k depreciation.
Wow. That's cool, very over subscribed on the east coast even now. Don't think its 4 years deep any more though, but I'm surprised its easy to buy a car that would be delivered this year with no previous.
Did that many people order 612s and then not take delivery? I just don't understand the logic of that. It only takes about 6 months from order to delivery (if that)-- how could you so misjudge your situation in 6 months?
Not yet I am really curious to see where the next generation of V12's are headed. If the 599's and 612's are in the 340 MSRP arena, Ferrari is going to have to do something special for the prior V12 owners to bite. You see the 430 guys holding on to their cars vs taking a 75 - 100 hit, so doubling that hit to the V12 guys should be interesting.
I just looked on Dupont and I did not see one new 612. I recall in another thread a dealer claimed a white 612 that someone took photos of at the factory and he said he spec'd it out to place on the showroom floor 1- 2009 used 2- 2008 used 17- total 612's for sale vs 599's - 56 total 430's - 236 total
I think Ferrari is in a real pickle on this one. 458 pricing didn't take into account the massive change in supply/demand for their cars. So do they offer the V12's at the same price point as the 458 and highlight the difference between the cars and their roles/missions, or do they keep the historic price differential between V8s and V12s and hope for the best?
