    That's funny.

    +1

I agree and disagree with both of them on many topics, which is ok, otherwise we wouldn't have a discussion. Both however not only have a deep passion for F1, but both of them know the history of F1 and are capable of putting events into historical perspective. That to me is the most important element when discussing F1. I have a real problem with folks who throw their arguments around but have a background of a few years of watching.

That seems a little harsh..... *IF* said arguments are well reasoned and presented, it's fine with me if they've only watched one race.

BS'ers OTOH are (always) quickly discovered, called out, and mostly then disappear, which is one of the reasons we have a pretty good signal to noise ratio in here. [Even when Mike and Moretti get going ;)]

    Cheers,
    Ian

The stress was on "throw around".

Things that particularly tick me off are superlatives like "best ever <driver/track/car/passing/race/etc>".

Understood. Badly made arguments don't tend to last long, but even so everyones entitled to throw their opinions into the discussion, even if they're wrong.......

+1 But I think we're all "guilty" of that on occasion ;)

    Thanks for the thoughts Tony.

Don't worry, I've never been banned and I doubt I ever will be, because I don't break the rules.

People only get banned when they break the rules, and if a dispute exists between long-term users and the # of bans for one is "lots" and for the other is "none", I think that speaks for itself.

In other words, the thread is peaceful and kind-hearted this far. That's because it's 3:30am in Australia :D

P.S. I'm sure things will quiet down once Webber gets fired from RBR ;) :D

Statements like that coming from you make me simply shake my head in disbelief.

MS is the most successful F1 driver of all times. That's measurable fact.

Whether he is/was the best ever nobody will ever know. As I said before, the best ever might have died in a F2 in Hockenheim or a 959 at Eau Rouge or in Williams in Tamburello or...

Somehow I'm not surprised about this sarcastic comment.

Cars are getting increasingly safer. And MS got lucky quite a few times. Has little to nothing to do with talent, particularly when accidents are caused by material breaking down. MS himself said he wouldn't have raced back in the fifties.

    Here is my rationale...

F1 is more competitive today than it has ever been. MS was the best of the best, when the cream of the crop was driving. The days of gentleman racers who were rich guys with a hankering for speed are over. MS was (is) the best in the most competitive era of F1 ever. He is the best that ever was :)

Possibly true, but hard to measure. However TODAY MS sucks.

Funny you say that because that's actually the argument AGAINST MS being the best ever. Senna went out too early to be measured against. And what cream was thereafter? Later bloomer Hakkinen and one hit wonders Hill and Villeneuve? By the time real men showed up again in F1, MS retired.

Those days were over after the fifties.

As I said, MS is the most successful F1 driver and deserving of his 7 titles. But you can't make a good case that he is the best ever. That case can't be made for any driver. He certainly was one of the best.

Not at all... it is absolutely more competitive because you can clearly see the money that is flowing in, which means the teams are much more picky in their choice of drivers, which means only the best get selected. There is no question about it... back in the day, all that was needed was enough money and you could be in F1. Today, even if you have a lot of money, you still need to have talent to be a driver. And you need a LOT of talent to be a good driver. That wasn't true back in the day.

Perhaps MS was just SO good that he was head and shoulders above the rest? He had plenty of people to compete against... if it were true that MS had no competition, he would have more WDC's than he does. Besides, if he had no competition it means those years he lost the WDC it was because he didnt have the car for it, which would mean being a driver who can develop a car is paramount... and it is... and MS is the best at that, which is why he was so successful.

    Sure you can.

He holds virtually ever record and title there is. He is the most successful driver ever. One could argue some of it could be coincidence, but not all of it. And he has *so* much of it, that even if some of it were coincidence, then he still is more successful than any other driver.

And he did this during the most competitive time in F1 history. It's not like he won lots of races 50 years ago when it was a rag-tag group of rich guys and he was the only one with real talent, he did it today, when the best of the best are in F1.

He is unquestionably the best there ever was.

On this comment, I know you don't like the guy, but this is pure bias talking. He left the sport for years... he came back and was immediately just a hair off Rosberg, who by all accounts is a very good driver.

Now he is beating Rosberg. And that is considering there is NO testing. When Rosberg started at Williams, he showed streaks of brilliance... many thought he was a Hamilton or an Alonso or a Kimi.

So, MS leaves the sport for years. Comes back, and within several *hours* in the car driving, he beats Rosberg.

    Utterly amazing.

    He is the best ever.
