When I shutdown my work laptop I got the infamous "shutdown and install updates" prompt which totaled 18 updates. On my home PC I had 17; below is a screenshot.

Did I miss the news about some big vulnerability?

Half of those patches are Office. What's that got to do with windows

My apologies, I tend to use Windows and Microsoft interchangeably though I realize this isn't correct. Either way, still a heck of a lot of patches.

This is exactly why I finally switched to apple on all the computers that I could. Unfortunately the software written for my company is windows based or I'd switch my businesses over also

yeah, it is insane. I just typed a whole paragraph here, but looked up and realized that I am once again a victim to the focus glitch that started right after these updates. I think it is time for a total O/S whipe and reinstall. I am having issues deselecting text, or things staying highlited and not being able to click buttons in my browsers.

Sounds like a browser problems not the OS.

What I hate is that my work laptop is configured to allow Microsoft updates to download, install and reboot without my permission. For instance, I came back from the gym today and found my computer had rebooted.

Nothing quite like the feeling of having to grind your way through a reboot and reopen all of your various apps/works in progress - MSFT does a seriously half-*ss job of reopening stuff for you. You also pray that your open files were saved properly. F*CK!

What's much worse than that is MS software variously changing WU settings. I keep it on Never Check...I do it manually. I installed some MS dev crap and it reset WU to default. NO FUN HAVING THE PC REBOOT IN THE MIDDLE OF DOING SOMETHING WITHOUT SO MUCH AS A WARNING PROMPT.

Not just ms, make very sure your adobe products are up to date. Mac os has had many updates, they just bundle them into fewer, but much larger files.

I only see patches becoming more frequent.

Why are you guys so critical to these updates? It shows that the companies are actively fixing bugs. M$ just happens to release them individually where as apple does 1 big patch.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4077 I stopped counting at 50 and that was back in May. Apple releasing 50+ in a day doesn't make the news but windows with 17 does...

Microsoft makes a pretty good OS...I have Vista Home Premium 64-bit and haven't had any issues (owned it since July 2009). I don't do any of their updates (suggested or critical).

I also don't use any Microsoft applications. Browser is FF, music and video is Winamp, office application is OpenOffice, etc.

You really should apply all the security updates as they are released. Also, apply security updates for MS products you don't use like IE because there's a chance some programs you use access shared files used by IE or just use it entirely. Further, make sure all of your other programs are updated, too. Java, anything Adobe, et cetera.

Unpatched boxes are the bane of the web.

Followed by an update from AVAST which disabled my wife's PC. After I uninstalled that pos processor hog everything worked just fine. I'm been trying to convince her on switching to MSE instead and this finally did the trick.

Which btw killed a buddy's PC who lives in the Caribbean so I've been on Skype for about 4 hours today trying to get him running. Nice.
