    question for those who might know: Should I perform a leakdown test prior to the engine firing up the first time, what numbers should I expect considering the rings have not seated at all? Or should I even waste my time performing such a test prior to firing.

    I always do, before installation. I'd like to see 5% maximum leakage, with zero leakage allowed through the valve train. This might be a good time to pressure test the cooling system, as well...

    Yep, I got the Mondial 8 Workshop Manual.
    Follow this as a guide,, but the leakdown pressure Ferrari recommends is too high. Use your shops judgment.

    thank you David. as a side note, the valves were of course vacuum tested prior to installing and they tested well. shooting for 5% now

    Back from a horrid trip to Dallas. Ugh, the traffic and the poorly constructed/thought out roads. Almost as bad as Boston.....almost. Don't get me started.

    Anyway, still drilling out that stupid bolt. I am recruiting a friend of mine who is locally well-known as a diesel mechanic who has a knack for unsticking the very stuck.

    Bolts are hard, get a set of cobalt drill bits, they go thru them like they were mild steel!

    Center punch the broken off bolt and drill a pilot hole at least 3/8" deep, then drill with the drill size closest to the bolt thread's minor diameter. Done right this will leave the bolt's threads in place where they can be easily picked out with an angle pick. Done wrong & you get to drill & tap the hole for a TimSert.

    Be careful as the drill bit gets to the end of the bolt. Go very slow as the bit will tend to grab as it breaks thru the end & you end up with a broken off cobalt drill bit the length of the bolt(been there!). Only thing worse to have broken off is a screw extracter, they're harder than cobalt bits(been there 2).

    Gee, I'm in Dallas today, I was just thinking how much better the roads & traffic are than back in Massachusetts! ;^) Guess it's a matter of perspective!

    oh yeah Dallas is 10 x better then Boston roads. those old cow trails in beantown make less than zero sense, if that's possible.

    cobalt bits. check. should be done tonight. engine in and fired by father's day

    I recently removed a broken engine cover bolt and had this very thing happen. My neighbor loaned me a set of mini carbide-tipped rotary cutting bits. Using these in a Dremel, I was able to slowly grind away the broken bolt around the broken extractor and pick the pieces out of the threads.

    Turned the engine over with the starter for the first time at lunch today. Cylinders are bone dry and the rings were installed dry. Also, the intake valves are closing 11 degrees later then they were before. Getting 165lbs per cylinder over a slow turning engine (guessing either the battery I am using is a bit weak or the engine is a bit tight, or a bit of both). Leak down is about 10%-13% all over. Once the engine is run and oil is circulating I am sure leak down will be better. Pleased with what I have so far though.

    engine in! started at 8:00am. engine dropped in, headers bolted up and a couple other things attached by 11:30am. Not bad at all. Also included is a pic of yours truly basking in the satisfaction.

    below are pics showing the level of the engine which I thought was best for reattaching the 5-8 header. There seems to be a sweet spot right when the center of the alternator is parallel with the gutter at the base of the rear window.

    Yeah, that sounds more than adequate.

    I'm at 135 mains, F24 tubes, 52 idles. Runs like hell, an easy pull to redline in 5th gear (@ 165 mph indicated), and 215 rwhp (257 crank).

    I'm still wondering how everybody seems to need bigger jets than I do, while I seem to have one of the better performing 308's out there....
