What do you think, will the 458 Spider with folding hardtop be much better looking than the coupe ?

From the folding hardtop mechanism patent pictures, the profile would look amazing. It's almost like the 458 is designed as an open top.

I'm still waiting for anyone to make a good photoshop based on the patent pictures.

If it does, it'll be a rare event. Hardtop coupes almost always look better than their convertible variants.

Yes, exactly why I made this thread in the first place. I can't help but thinking that, after seeing the patent pics and a bit of imagination. I'm guessing the rear window glass will be a bubble shape not unlike the 599's, but more radical.

Nope, that doesn't look better. You lose one of the nicest parts of the design, the gorgeous 'swoop' towards the back.

That is a very cool catch. Are you sure this is the patent application for the 458?

Well, if we look at the space between the doors and the rear wheels, it's a mid-engined car. My money on a 458 Spider than F70.

That sorta reminds me of a Carrera GT for some reason.

Honestly, I could care less which one "looks" better. Driving that car with the roof off is the only experience I care about.

I'm not buying a piece of art sitting on a wall or in a museum. I'm buying a car -- a car that I will drive.

+1 - Haven't been a fan of recent Ferrari drop-top designs when compared to their coupe counterparts, but the drop-top experience is what makes them irresistible to me.

With due respect, please consider all points about open top vs coupe driving experience taken.

I'm sure it has been discussed to death for decades but is not the topic of this thread. Thank you for understanding.

Top down, I'm sure the 458 will look gorgeous as, I agree with you, it looks to me like it was designed with the spyder profile in mind. Top up however, not so much. Hard tops convt's, to me, look slightly awkward. Only MB, IMO, has managed to make them clean and beautiful looking.

    Better? :D

I am willing to bet that this patent will be used on the 599 "Superamerica", or whatever it's going to be called, version. I can't believe it would work with a mid engine design.

I respect your opinion, but I think it looks good in a Lamborghini way. "LOOK AT ME, I'M DRIVING A SUPERCAR AND THAT MAKES ME A FREAKING ROCK STAR!" kind of way.

Haha, two different leagues, but OK. :)

That's the one and only thing I hate about driving these cars: the unwanted attention.

A corvette would be perfect for you then sir. For the rest of us who know that it's not the car we are buying but the brand, let us discuss this appropriately on how the car could look like. Don't fool yourself in thinking a few tenth of a second justifies spending 200k more for a vehicle.

I'd rather walk than go in a Corvette. I know exactly what I'm buying (and explained exactly why I think closed beats open). And I couldn't care less about tenths of a second.

Do your comments suggest you revel in the attention?
