Anyone seen a car with this option? I'm interested to know what the lens looks like and how good the dash display is...

I saw a picture from the factory. There is an oval cutout (approx. 1.75 inch x .75 inch- my guess), recessed in the center rear bumper right above the rear license plate area (that is above the marker lights) and below the silver horse on the horizontal body line. Dead center in the oval cutout is the lense, same as you would see in any vehicle. The lense is encircled by a body color recessed plastic insert. I think it could have been better located in a more obscure area. I ordered it as I dislike the parking sensors and rear vision is a bit limited in the 458. I also have a tight turnaround at my garage, limited by a large and well built stone wall. No idea how the picture quality is. I had to make a final spec decision quickly. I spoke to a good aftermarket auto audio/radar installer. He was unaware of anyone making a camera with a simple plug in interface that would work with the Cali or 458 screens.

Thanks guys. I think I'll cancel that option as I have ordered front and rear parking sensors and I rather hoped the camera would be better hidden.

Dealer says build is now locked in with camera in spec and it's too late to change it. Oh well...

It still seems strange that there doesn't seem to be a picture anywhere showing a camera in the rear bumper.

My dealer was suggesting both the rear camera and rear sensors. That made me drop the camera. He said that in his experience people were very used to the beep beeeeeep beeeeeeeeep and missed it if they did not have it

It's a sexy feature that is pretty useless. Who backs up while looking forward? I don't. I'm sure not going to rely on a camera to tell me if I'm about to hit something.

The beeps give me input while my own eyes can look reward thank you.

Cameras are great for everyday use of something like a mini van where you might have kids playing behind you and you can't see them in the window. But that's really unlikely in a sports car.

I've got a camera on my S-Class and use it every time I back out of my garage. It does help to aim the car - but isn't essential.

I had one fitted to my Lambo but the camera picture isn't good enough to be useful.

My wife went from a camera (2004 Lexus) to one with only sensors (2008 BMW 535 - at the time no camera avail). She's now back to a Lexus (BMW was a reliability nightmare) with a camera, but no sensors (part of some hard to find package in the rare color she wanted). The bottom line is she really misses those sensors...turns out they were actually alot more useful than the camera.

I have an S class with both. My Cali has sensors only, no regrets.

My dealer has managed to remove the camera from my order. I'm keeping the parking sensors.

Thanks to MikeS, I've now seen a PDF showing pics of the rear camera. (Cheers Mike! :))

The PDF with the photos is too big to upload here. Any ideas?

You can open the pdf on the page showing the camera pic then do a Ctrl/Print Scrn to capture the screen image. Paste it into something like MSPaint and save it as a jpeg file. That will allow you to post the pic here.

    Thanks Iain. :)

Talk about rare pics. Mike's dealer called FNA who called Italy who send someone out on the the floor to get the pics.

I had looked everywhere for a photo and had no luck. My dealer tells me it is a popular option on forward orders but no cars on the spotter sites have the camera. I guess the first cars with cameras are only now being built which seems odd since Ferrari referred to it as an available option when the car was first announced nearly a year ago prior to Frankfurt.

It'll be fine on grey, black and dark blue but perhaps not so much on the lighter colours. Like anything, you'd soon get used to it.

I ended up going way over budget on my spec, so it was good to find one thing I could manage without.

In my case, closer to 20% than 10%.

My only defence is that others will spend more. Plus, I've waited a long time for my first Ferrari.

Doesn't look any worse than the parking sensors.

What's a budget? Too funny... I had the exact same thoughts while building out mine, then of course just ordered what I wanted regardless of cost. You only live once! Enjoy yours!
This was a very helpful discussion. Thanks all.
